Valve released a new Deadlock update on Steam on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 9:40 PM GMT. The Deadlock patch, plainly titled “Minor Update – 08-22-2026” in the official notes, does not resemble any of the game’s recent fixes.
No other hero is affected. This Deadlock patch targets only Celeste and two support items she uses. Ten lines of changes target her abilities, and two more cover items available to the whole team.
A fix this narrow never happens by accident. When a studio dedicates an entire Deadlock patch to a single character, it is usually because that character poses a problem the rest of the balance changes don’t explain. Which problem, and exactly what each change does in a match: that’s what the official notes lay out.
A Deadlock Patch Built Around One Character
Since the closed beta opened (the test phase in which the game is only accessible by invitation, before a full release), Deadlock has gone through an adjustment pace very different from today’s. Between August and December 2024, Valve shipped a major update every two weeks. The studio cut that schedule on January 8, 2025 to give itself more time for internal testing.

The previous release, on August 12, 2026, followed that broader format: a dozen heroes adjusted at once, in a balance patch far bigger than this one. Ten days later, this new Deadlock patch swings to the opposite extreme: a single name on the list of changes, Celeste.
Who Celeste Is, and Why She Was So Frustrating to Face
Billed as The Dazzling Celeste, this carnival star performs in the streets of Manhattan. In the game’s fiction, she’s a unicorn hiding her identity so she won’t be captured for her horn. Her role tags set the tone: Performer, Disruptive, and Dazzling.
Celeste arrived in Deadlock on February 9, 2026, the fifth hero from the “Old Gods, New Blood” update contest. Her four abilities all play on the same theme, mobility and disruption: Light Eater (a fiery breath that increases damage taken by enemies it hits), Dazzling Trick (a prismatic shield that bursts and silences opponents), Radiant Daggers (a rain of projectiles), and her ultimate, Shining Wonder.

For the British outlet PCGamesN, which analyzed this Deadlock patch on August 23, 2026, Ken Allsop sums up the problem in one line: a well-played Celeste ranks among the most miserable characters to face, between her mobility, her healing, and an ultimate able to swing a team fight (several players from each side clashing at once) on its own, with no obvious answer for the other team.
The Deadlock Patch in Detail, Line by Line
Every line of this Deadlock patch touches a specific setting. The cooldown (the delay before an ability can be used again) on Dazzling Trick goes from 32 to 34seconds, and its tier 3 (the highest upgrade level a player can unlock for an ability) gets its own cooldown extended while its silence duration is shortened. The tier 2 shield also changes in nature: its spirit scaling (the multiplier that raises its value based on the character’s spirit stat) climbs slightly while its flat value drops.
Radiant Daggers loses a bit of its raw power in favor of its most advanced tier. Shining Wonder, Celeste’s ultimate, remains the most heavily reworked ability: its bounce range drops by one meter, its damage falls from 165 to 140, and its spirit scaling drops by a third, from 0.9 to 0.6. In exchange, its tier 2 gains a scaling bonus it did not have before.
Two items used by Celeste, but available to every hero, also take a hit. Radiant Regeneration heals for less per use, and Restorative Locket protects a bit less against spirit damage.
| Element | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Radiant Regeneration (heal per use) | 70 | 65 |
| Restorative Locket (spirit resistance) | 10% | 8% |
| Dazzling Trick (cooldown) | 32s | 34s |
| Dazzling Trick, tier 2 (barrier) | +80, 0.7 scaling | +70, 0.76 scaling |
| Dazzling Trick, tier 3 (cooldown) | -18s | -20s |
| Dazzling Trick, tier 3 (silence duration) | 1.5s | 1.25s |
| Radiant Daggers (spirit amp per charge) | +8% | +7% |
| Radiant Daggers, tier 3 (spirit amp per charge) | +3% | +4% |
| Shining Wonder (bounce range) | 17.5m | 16.5m |
| Shining Wonder (damage) | 165 | 140 |
| Shining Wonder (spirit scaling) | 0.9 | 0.6 |
| Shining Wonder, tier 2 | no scaling bonus | +0.45 spirit scaling |
What This Surgical Patch Says About Valve’s Pace
The Deadlock Wiki, which keeps an up-to-date table of every update to the game, points out a striking figure: 212 days separate this Deadlock patch from the last major update. Deadlock remains in closed beta, accessible only by invitation, and Valve never comments on its balance decisions. So there’s no way to say for certain that Celeste was flagged internally as a problem. What this Deadlock patch shows is a studio that seems to prefer frequent, targeted tweaks over infrequent, sweeping overhauls.

This choice matters even more since the launch of ranked mode in early August, which makes every imbalance more visible and more costly for players climbing the ranks. A hero that’s too strong in ranked matches directly affects outcomes, and fixing it quickly, even one character at a time, limits the damage while waiting for the next broader overhaul.
This pace of one-off tweaks doesn’t stop Valve from running several projects in parallel. Observers recently found, inside Deadlock’s own code, traces that shed light on the studio’s plans around Half-Life 3. The meticulous rebalancing of Celeste and preparations for an entirely different game can apparently move forward side by side in the same Bellevue offices.
