Nintendo Direct September 9: What Matters for Switch 2

Forty announcements in forty-five minutes, that’s what Nintendo Life takes away from the Nintendo Direct broadcast on September 9, 2026, the day after a Direct entirely dedicated to the Zelda series’ fortieth anniversary. After the rumor circulating in early September, Nintendo had set two separate dates, the 8th for Zelda and the 9th for this general Nintendo Direct, one of the highlights of the September showcase calendar. Going through the forty-odd announcements in the order they landed doesn’t teach much about what matters for a Switch 2 player. Three groups stand out. The games that really matter, the ports that reassure without surprising, and what happened the same day without going through the Direct’s stage.

What really matters on Switch 2

The schedule revealed during this Nintendo Direct opens with Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave, due September 17, 2026, then Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on October 22. Pikmin 4 joins Switch 2 on November 12, in a Switch 2 edition bundled with content called Dandori Academy, which the recap doesn’t detail. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 follows on December 3 in its own Switch 2 edition, and Professor Layton and The New World of Steam closes out the year on December 10, 2026, according to the Nintendo Life recap.

SourceNintendo Life, Liam Doolan, September 10, 2026: the article notes on the eShop listing that Metroid Ravenous supports 120 Hz.

Three releases stretch into spring 2027, Metroid Ravenous on January 28, Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis on February 12, then Final Fantasy VII Revelation on April 8.

Metroid Ravenous has the most concrete details. Developed by MercurySteam, already behind Metroid Dread, the game will support 120 Hz on Switch 2 (a refresh rate of 120 frames per second instead of 60, for smoother visuals), according to the Nintendo eShop listing spotted by Nintendo Life. Its file size is estimated at 20.2 GB, against 4.2 GB for Metroid Dread and 27.6 GB for Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, the series’ previous release on the same console. Amiibo (Nintendo’s connected figures that unlock in-game content), surround sound, and HDR (an extended range of colors and contrast) round out the listing, along with a special edition whose contents Nintendo hasn’t detailed.

Ports and re-releases, familiar comfort

Monster Hunter Wilds led the ports announced during the Nintendo Direct, with a Switch 2 release set for December 4, 2026. The version bundles every update released since launch, a local four-hunter multiplayer mode, and full cross-play with other platforms (playing online with PS5, Xbox, or PC owners). Capcom also confirms the Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance expansion is coming to this version in 2027. Digital pre-orders open October 19 at $29.99, a discounted price valid through December 19, while the Game-Key Card version (a physical cartridge that doesn’t hold the game data but triggers its download) costs $39.99 with a bonus Deluxe pack. Nintendo Life’s article on this announcement couldn’t be captured as an image, so its link is the only reference.

Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 join the console in their remake versions on October 16, 2026. The Witcher III Wild Hunt Remastered follows on September 29, 2026, with an expansion planned for 2027. Hyrule Warriors Age Of Calamity Definitive Edition arrives February 25, 2027, Kingdom Come Deliverance II Royal Edition is announced for 2027 with no more precise date, and Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion was available the very day of the Direct, according to the Nintendo Life recap.

Stellar Blade Complete Edition closes the list on November 5, 2026, at $59.99 according to Nintendo Life. Six days after the State of Play dedicated to PlayStation games, this game born on PS5 arrives on Nintendo with a proper physical release. The physical version fits entirely on the cartridge, with no Game-Key Card or extra download needed. A steelbook edition (a metal case prized by collectors) is offered at $69.99 through Panax. The Complete Edition adds four outfits from a Bayonetta partnership, three already shown and one kept secret by studio Shift Up.

Mario Kart World and the system update beat the Direct to the punch

On the very day of the Nintendo Direct, Mario Kart World got its 1.8.0 update. Ten classic tracks from the original Super Mario Kart join the game, spread across Mario Circuit, Ghost Valley, Choco Island, Vanilla Lake, and Koopa Beach, with floor panels replacing item boxes on these vintage tracks. Two new Knockout Tours (a progressive elimination mode) are added under the names Propeller Rally and Turnip Rally. Online and local wireless lobbies now accept up to 26 players, and a spectator mode can now be joined from the pause menu, according to the patch notes published by Nintendo Life.

Nintendo Life, Liam Doolan, September 10, 2026: the full notes for the 23.0.0 system update.

The next day, the 23.0.0 system update in turn added variable refresh rate in TV mode (the display adjusts its rate to match the game to reduce stutter), provided the dock is also updated. A full transfer between two Switch 2 consoles, save data and screenshots included, becomes possible. The handheld mode performance boost can now be toggled from quick settings, and GameChat (the console’s built-in voice and video chat system) shows chats already joined and lets you start one without picking friends first, according to Nintendo Life.

What the Nintendo Direct didn’t say

Two Zelda announcements were missing from this general Direct, the remake of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and the Zelda-themed console. Both had already been shown the day before, in the Direct dedicated to Zelda’s 40th anniversary.

Nintendo Life, September 9, 2026: the full Direct recap, where Onyx, Stage Fright, and Yokai Watch 2 remain without a precise date.

Three announcements have no firm date in the Nintendo Life recap. Onyx The Dark Grip and Stage Fright only carry a year, 2027. Yokai Watch 2 Haunted Domain is only described as in development, with no release window at all.

The same recap dates the free Star Fox update to September 29, 2027, more than a year after this Nintendo Direct. Nothing in the source explains this gap with the rest of the schedule, or corrects it. The date stays as Nintendo Life published it.
