Build Overview
The Bear Shaman is a Druid Ascendancy build that turns you into an unstoppable melee powerhouse. Built around the Maul skill and Bear Form, it combines raw physical damage with totems and shouts to dominate both the campaign and endgame maps.
This guide is based on the build by @ronarray, one of the most optimized Bear Shaman versions available for Season 4. The rotation combines Rampage with Furious Slam for maximum uptime, while Shockwave Totem provides constant pressure support.
The Fury of the Mountain spirit gem is the true pivot of this build, coming online at level 14 and drastically amplifying all Bear Form damage. Before reaching that milestone, you will rely on Herald of Ash to supplement your damage output during the campaign.
Build Strengths
- Exceptional Bossing damage — Maul hits extremely hard in Bear Form
- Very solid clear speed thanks to Walking Calamity and Shockwave Totem
- Good survivability with high Armor and Life regeneration
- Smooth leveling from Act 1 all the way to Uber endgame
- Multiple step setups to guide you through each phase of progression
Build Weaknesses
- Relatively immobile — Bear Form limits movement speed
- Mana management can be tight before getting Mana Leech online
- Gear-dependent at the Uber Endgame stage (Bear Talisman required)
Gem Setup by Stage
Below you will find the gem setups for each stage of progression. Select the tab that matches your current situation. Start with the Act 1-3 setup and transition through each stage as you unlock new skills and supports.

7 skills • 18 gemmesAct 3 – Interlude
9 skills • 30 gemmesRecommended Equipment
- Weapon (Talisman) — Bear Talisman: the core item of this build. It enables Bear Form and provides massive bonuses to your melee skills in that form. Mandatory at the Uber Endgame stage.
- Armor — Prioritize high Armor and maximum Life. A chest with both stats will significantly improve your survivability.
- Gloves — Look for Physical damage and bonuses to melee skills. Attack speed is a strong secondary stat.
- Boots — Movement speed is mandatory. Bear Form already slows you down, so you need to compensate here.
- Belt — Focus on Armor and Life. A stiff belt with both rolls is ideal.
- Amulet — +1 level to melee skills is the top priority. This scales all your Bear Form damage globally.
- Rings — Physical damage and elemental resistances. Make sure your resistances are capped before focusing on offensive stats.
Gameplay Tips
- Always keep Shockwave Totem active — it provides constant Armor Break on enemies, amplifying your Maul damage significantly.
- Use Ferocious Roar before engaging a Boss to apply your shout buffs before the fight starts.
- Manage your Frenzy Charges carefully: Charge Regulation lets you maintain three Frenzy Charges permanently, which is key to keeping your damage consistent.
- Pounce is your main gap-closer. Use it to reposition quickly or to quickly reach a boss after dodging its attacks.
- Walking Calamity is your best clear tool. Activate it on packs and let the fire explosions clean up the screen while you focus on elite targets.
Bear Combos and Rotation
The core rotation of this build is straightforward. Start by deploying your Shockwave Totem, then activate Ferocious Roar to buff yourself. From there, spam Maul as your primary attack to generate Rage and deal damage.
The key is maintaining your Rampage stacks. Use it as often as possible to keep the buff active, which substantially boosts your movement speed and Frenzy Charge generation. This creates a virtuous cycle: more Rampage stacks = more Frenzy Charges = more damage from Maul.
For single-target, alternate between Maul and Furious Slam to maximize your Walking Calamity stacks and keep the Fury of the Mountain Flow going. This is the optimal DPS loop for Boss encounters.
Fury of the Mountain: the level 14 pivot
This spirit gem is the cornerstone of the build from Act 3 onward. Once you unlock it, your Bear Form damage increases dramatically. Fury of the Mountain grants bonus physical damage to all Bear Form attacks based on your Armor, creating a powerful synergy with the defensive stats you are stacking anyway.
Before level 14, focus on building Armor and Life while using Herald of Ash to supplement your damage output. Once Fury of the Mountain comes online, you will feel a significant power spike that carries you through the rest of the campaign and into early maps.
Spirit Gem Setup
Herald of Ash is your first spirit gem and remains useful until you transition fully into Fury of the Mountain at level 14. It provides fire damage on kill which helps with clear speed during the campaign.
Time of Need is an optional defensive pick for harder content. It grants Life regeneration during tough fights, which complements your tankiness well.
At higher tiers, consider adding Clarity I to help with Mana sustain — particularly useful before you get Mana Leech up and running. Cannibalism I on Herald of Ash is another great option, providing additional Life regeneration on kill.
Shaman Ascendancy Order
For the Shaman Ascendancy, start with Druic Champion. This is your first and most impactful node, providing a substantial boost to Armor and physical damage reduction while in Bear Form.
Follow up with Furious Wellspring as your second pick. This node grants Rage generation when you use Warcries, synergizing perfectly with Ferocious Roar and keeping your Rage permanently topped up during combat.
Your third node should be Reactive Growth, which boosts your Life regeneration and Armor further. Combined with Fury of the Mountain, the additional Armor translates directly into more damage.
For the remaining nodes, prioritize any Notable that increases your Frenzy Charge limit or enhances your Bear Form skills. The Shaman tree is relatively flexible beyond the first three picks, so adapt based on what you need for your current content.
