Build Overview

The Melee Chronomancer is back in version 0.4 and better than ever. This build exploits a unique mechanic: keeping shrine buffs permanently active thanks to two The Hammer of Faith, maces that grant a random shrine buff every 10 seconds.

The key to the build? The « slower expire rate. » By stacking 75% buff expiration reduction (the maximum cap), shrine buffs go from 20 to 80 seconds. You gain two shrine buffs every 10 seconds, and they last four times longer. The result: you can have up to eight different shrine buffs active at the same time.

What makes this build particularly strong for Citadel bosses is the ability to wait for the shrine that grants immortality for 80 seconds. You enter the fight and ignore all damage. The melee gameplay uses Mace Strike for fast clear, Sunder for packs, and Perfect Strike + Hammer of the Gods for single target.

Build Strengths

  • Permanent shrine buffs: With 75% slower expire rate, shrine buffs last 80 seconds. You can chain up to eight different buffs simultaneously.
  • Excellent for Citadel bosses: By waiting for the immortality shrine, you can ignore all damage for 80 seconds or more.
  • Very tanky: Scaling via Black Scythe Training (Heroic Tragedy Timeless Jewel) gives +1% ES per 2 Strength, resulting in approximately 200% more ES.
  • Accessible budget: Aside from a few expensive supports, the build remains affordable in the current economy.
  • Flexible clear skills: Mace Strike, Sunder, Molten Blast or Stampede – choose whichever suits your playstyle.

Build Weaknesses

  • No weapon swap possible: When you swap weapons, all shrine buffs disappear. This is a dealbreaker for some players.
  • RNG on shrine buffs: The mace grants a random shrine, including ones you already have. Sometimes you won’t get the buff you need for a while.
  • Specific mandatory items: The Hammer of Faith, Cospri’s Will and Wanderlust are essential. Without them, the concept does not work.

Gem Setup by Stage

This build offers 1 progression stage from leveling to the final build. Select a stage to view the corresponding gem setup.

Recommended Equipment

  • Weapons: 2x The Hammer of Faith, ideally with 3 sockets for 5 attack speed runes and 1 chaos damage rune.
  • Body Armour: Cospri’s Will with 3 sockets or the « Increased Evasion and Energy Shield » corrupt. Double corrupt is possible on a high budget.
  • Boots: Wanderlust to ignore slows (cancels the negative effect of Temporal Chains). Ideally with a resistance corrupt.
  • Amulet: Astramentis for ES scaling via Strength and to resolve attribute requirements (100+ Intelligence, 67 Dexterity, 350 Strength).
  • Belt: Soul Tether for Energy Shield leech. Use a Vaal Cultivation Orb to remove the « -5% ES per second » mod.
  • Ring 1: Rare with high resistances, rarity and life. If you have no leech on the ring, take it on the gloves instead.
  • Ring 2 (optional): Blackflame to convert ignite damage to chaos, synergizing with Withering Presence from Cospri’s Will.
  • Helmet: Rare with high Energy Shield and elemental resistances.
  • Gloves: Rare with Energy Shield. Flat damage is less important than ES.
  • Focus: Any Focus with « Curse Magnitude » (purchasable or craftable via the Abyss mod).
  • Jewel: Heroic Tragedy (Verona version) for the Black Scythe Training keystone (+1% ES per 2 Strength).
  • Charms: Anti-Freeze and anti-bleed. Blood of the Warrior to maintain Rage when there are no targets.

Gameplay Tips

  • Cast Temporal Chains only once per zone: Thanks to Cospri’s Will, the curse has infinite duration. Just cast it once upon entering each zone.
  • Never weapon swap: This is the golden rule. Swapping weapons removes all accumulated shrine buffs.
  • For Citadel bosses: Wait until you have the immortality shrine before engaging. With 80 seconds of duration, you can ignore all damage.
  • Focus with Curse Magnitude: Check in the skill menu the exact percentage of slower expire rate gained via Temporal Chains. The goal is to reach 45% to cap at 75% total.
  • Use Zerphi’s Infamy on Hammer of the Gods: This support generates Glory by spending life rather than through stun build-up. Plus 50% more damage and 50% AoE as a bonus.
  • For clear: Sunder works better than Molten Blast, Stampede or Boneshatter according to the author. Use all attack speed + AoE supports + Supercritical.
  • Charged Mark: This support on Sniper’s Mark creates electrified ground that grants 20% more damage. Extremely powerful.

How the Slower Expire Rate Works

The slower expire rate is the core of the build. This mechanic makes all buffs last longer. The available sources are:

  • Passive Tree: A passive that grants 10% slower expire rate for buffs.
  • Chronomancer Ascendancy: Two small passives that each give 10% slower expire rate, for 20% total.
  • Temporal Chains: The curse provides 25% by default, but it scales with Curse Magnitude. With a Focus having the « Curse Magnitude » mod, you reach 45%.

The cap is 75%. This build reaches it with: 10% (tree) + 20% (ascendancy) + 45% (Temporal Chains with magnitude). At 75%, all buffs last 4 times longer. Shrine buffs that normally last 20 seconds become 80 seconds.

The Temporal Chains + Atzer’s Allure Combo

The problem: you want Temporal Chains on yourself for the slower expire rate, but the curse also slows you. The solution uses three items:

  • Cospri’s Will: This armour makes duration curses infinite. You cast Temporal Chains once per zone and it’s done.
  • Atziri’s Allure: This recently added support reflects curses you inflict onto yourself. You curse yourself with Temporal Chains.
  • Wanderlust: These boots make you ignore slows. Temporal Chains no longer slows you, but the slower expire rate stays active.

Result: you get the benefits of Temporal Chains without the drawbacks. The original version 0.1 build used Time Snap to reset the cooldown of Hammer of the Gods, but since HotG no longer has a cooldown, that idea is dead. The focus is now on shrine buffs.

Energy Shield Scaling via Strength

Why scale ES instead of life when you’re stacking Strength for Giant’s Blood? The Giant’s Blood passive halves the life gained from Strength. Scaling life becomes difficult, especially with an Evasion/ES armour like Cospri’s Will.

The solution: the Heroic Tragedy Jewel (Verona version) which unlocks the Black Scythe Training keystone. This passive grants +1% Energy Shield per 2 Strength. With approximately 350 Strength, you gain ~175% more ES. That’s huge.

The Astramentis amulet completes the setup by providing +50% additional ES and resolving all attribute requirements of the build.

Passive Tree Configuration

The tree may look strange at first glance, but it is optimized for this specific build. The progression steps:

  • Start: Energy Shield passives + Heroic Tragedy Jewel for Black Scythe Training as early as possible.
  • Weapon Set 2: All passive points in the second weapon set are spent on Curse Magnitude passives for Temporal Chains.
  • Warrior Zone: You pass through to take AoE, damage passives, and most importantly Giant’s Blood + Fast Metabolism (prevents leech from stopping when at full life).
  • Key passive: The passive that grants 10% slower expire rate for buffs is crucial.

For the Chronomancer ascendancy, the two small slower expire rate passives are mandatory. Apex of the Moment is the most useful. Now and Again can proc on war cries, marks or Hammer of the Gods. Time Freeze is not necessarily needed – you can prefer the small 8% AoE passive instead.
