Build Overview
NickTew’s Whirling Assault Stormweaver is arguably one of the most fun and fastest builds in Path of Exile 2. This spin-to-win build exploits the Reverse Chill mechanic to achieve up to 70% action speed permanently. It feels like having an Acceleration Shrine active at all times.
The concept is simple yet brilliant: the Sirin’s Inheritance body armour reverses the effect of chill on you, and the Shackles of the Wretched gloves with the specific corruption let you apply chill to yourself. Stormweaver applies two simultaneous chill instances, breaking the usual 50% cap and reaching 70%.
The result? Massive AoE with Whirling Assault, ultra-fast mapping, and enough damage to melt bosses in just a few rotations. You can literally play this build with a single button while nuking the entire screen.
Build Strengths
- Insane speed: 70% permanent action speed from Reverse Chill – everything is faster (movement, attacks, portals, levers)
- Best mapper in the game: The massive AoE of Whirling Assault combined with the speed makes this probably the most efficient mapping build out there
- One-button gameplay: Spin, everything explodes – no complex combo to master
- Huge damage: Bosses melt in a few rotations; you can stack up to +128% damage via Stormweaver’s double Shock
- Reasonable budget: Apart from the corrupted gloves (~65 divines), the rest of the gear is very accessible
- Passive defense: Enemies are slowed by 70% from chill, which compensates for the glass cannon playstyle
Build Weaknesses
- Full glass cannon: You sacrifice the body armour and gloves slots for offensive uniques – no traditional defenses
- Expensive gloves: Shackles of the Wretched with the correct corruption go for 65-70 divines minimum
- Permanent auto-shock: You need a Grounding charm with reduced charges to mitigate the issue
- Auto-ignite risk: When using Headhunter, you need the ignite immunity anointment or must avoid all fire damage sources
Gem Setup by Stage
This build offers 1 progression stage from leveling to the final build. Select a stage to see the corresponding gem setup.
Default
11 skills • 54 gemsRecommended Equipment
- Body Armour: Sirin’s Inheritance – REQUIRED for Reverse Chill (reversed chill = action speed)
- Gloves: Shackles of the Wretched with the « ailments reflected to you » corruption AND without « cannot be chilled » – this is the most expensive piece (~65 divines)
- Belt: Headhunter for ultimate mapping, or Soul Tether for a tankier version with Energy Shield leech
- Weapon: Quarterstaff with double phys (gain as phys), crit chance, crit damage and +levels to attack skills
- Helmet: Maximum Energy Shield possible + life + resistances
- Boots: Energy Shield + movement speed + resistances (increased effect of socketed items is a luxury)
- Rings: A ring with leech% of phys attack damage as life + flat phys damage + life + resistances
- Amulet: Flat Energy Shield + % Energy Shield + Global Defense + levels to melee skills if possible
- Charms: Grounding charm with 30%+ reduced charges (REQUIRED to manage auto-shock)
Gameplay Tips
- Mapping: Hold down Whirling Assault and charge forward – it’s truly one-button. Herald of Thunder with Armour Break I + Armour Explosion handles the rest
- Bosses: Before the boss spawns, cast Thunderstorm with your weapon swap shock magnitude to apply a massive shock (+128% damage). Then spam Whirling Assault + Tempest Bell
- Power Charges: Use Ice Strike with Ailith’s Chimes + Culmination to generate your power charges after 2-3 Whirling Assaults
- Headhunter: Watch your chill magnitude in the top left. If it drops to 17% (HH mod), temporarily unequip the belt
- Anti-Ignite: If using Headhunter, take the anointment that grants ignite immunity when your support gems are red
- Energy Shield: Convalescence is your only source of ES recovery – activate it as soon as your shield drops
How Reverse Chill Works
Reverse Chill is the mechanic that makes this build so fast. Normally, chill slows you by 30 to 50%. With Sirin’s Inheritance, this effect is reversed: instead of slowing you down, it speeds you up by the same percentage.
But how do you apply chill to yourself? That’s where Shackles of the Wretched with the special corruption come in. These gloves reflect ailments you inflict on enemies back onto yourself. Every time you chill an enemy with Whirling Assault, you also chill yourself.
The action speed gained affects literally everything: attack animations, movement, opening portals, interacting with levers… This is what makes Whirling Assault feel so smooth, since the base animation is fairly slow.
Why Choose Stormweaver
The choice of Stormweaver is not arbitrary. This ascendancy has the unique property of applying two chill instances simultaneously. Normally, chill is capped at 50% maximum. But with two 35% chills stacking, you reach 70%.
Stormweaver also provides other crucial advantages. First, all your damage contributes to chill – no need to hunt for cold damage sources on your gear. Second, you also apply a double shock to enemies, which represents a massive damage boost on bosses.
If you play a different ascendancy with imperfect gloves (that still have « cannot be chilled for 6 seconds »), you won’t be able to benefit from the second chill instance and will be capped at 35-50%.
Tanky Variant with Soul Tether
NickTew also offers a more defensive version for players who find the glass cannon playstyle too risky. It involves replacing Headhunter with Soul Tether, a belt that lets you leech Energy Shield.
Soul Tether works as follows: excess life leech is redirected to your Energy Shield. Combined with a larger ES pool, this makes the build significantly more resilient. You lose the insane speed and random buffs from Headhunter, but you gain much more stable survivability.
Be careful to pick a Soul Tether that does NOT have the « lose X% of energy shield per second » mod – look exclusively for the one with « excess life recovery from leech is applied to energy shield ».
Anti-Ignite Setup for Headhunter
One of this build’s pitfalls: you reflect all ailments, including ignite. If you gain fire damage (via a Headhunter mod or by clicking a meteor shrine), you will ignite yourself and die instantly.
The simplest solution without Headhunter: never have any source of fire damage on your gear. No « gain as extra fire », no flat fire damage on rings.
With Headhunter, this is impossible since certain mods grant fire damage. You then need to use the special anointment that grants ignite immunity when a majority of your support gems are red. NickTew fills his sockets with useless red supports just to activate this immunity.
Weapon Swap and Shock Magnitude
To maximize your boss damage, the build uses a clever weapon swap. The secondary weapon is loaded with multiple sources of « shock magnitude » – the higher the effect, the more damage the boss takes.
The technique: before a boss spawns, swap to the weapon set with maximum shock magnitude, cast Thunderstorm to apply a massive shock (+128% damage in the best cases), then swap back to your main weapon and unleash Whirling Assault.
This double shock stacked via Stormweaver is what allows bosses to melt so quickly, even with a mapping-oriented build.
