Build Overview

The Napalm Wolves build by Oscrix is an original Minion Instability build that uses the spirit gem Wolf Pack as its primary damage vector. The wolves have a massive amount of life relative to their spirit cost, spread across 9 creatures that scatter across the map for exceptional clear.

The core mechanic revolves around combining Minion Instability, Infernal Legion I and Last Gasp. The wolves lose their life automatically via Infernal Legion I and explode thanks to Minion Instability. The Last Gasp support lets them stay alive temporarily after the explosion, which enables the weapon swap trick: switch to a set where they are disabled, then return to the active set to make them respawn and explode again.

For single target, the build uses Bogfeld Commoner spectres, which deliver an impressive concentrated burst of damage. With Blasphemy Temporal Chains slowing enemies and triggering the Ascendancy Lich explosions, this build delivers smooth and mobile gameplay. Oscrix played it to level 99 in hardcore Vaal league.

Build Strengths

  • Exceptional clear: The wolves intelligently scatter across the map and chain-explode thanks to their recently improved AI
  • Powerful single target: Bogfeld Commoner spectres deliver a devastating concentrated burst of damage on bosses
  • One-button gameplay: Aside from the rhythmic weapon swap, the build plays almost entirely with a single key
  • Mobility exceptional: Focus on movement speed in the Passive Tree and jewels, allowing you to sprint while weapon swapping
  • Solid defenses: Chaos Inoculation + Energy Shield + Temporal Chains slowing enemies to the point they almost never attack
  • Proven in hardcore: Oscrix reached level 99 in Vaal hardcore league with this build

Build Weaknesses

  • Weapon swap mandatory: You must press weapon swap twice in a precise Rhythm. If you spam it or forget, damage drops drastically
  • No mana regeneration: The build requires a mana flask as it has no mana regen source whatsoever
  • Specific gear required: Pieces with +minion skills and spirit are essential and can be expensive
  • Fire resistance forbidden: You cannot use a Purity of Fire sceptre or ally resistance suffixes, otherwise minions explode more slowly

Gem Setup by Stage

This build offers 3 progression stages from leveling to the final build. Select a stage to see the corresponding gem setup.

Recommended Equipment

  • Helmet: +2 minion skills (rare), essence for resistances, greater exaltation for ES. Desecrate an ES prefix
  • Amulet: +3 minion skills (fracture), spirit, quality (each 1% quality = 1% more spectre damage). Greater Essence of Enhancement for overall defense
  • Focus: Energy shield, +2 minion skills (Desecrate prefix, 1/20 chance). T1 flat ES + Greater Essence of Enhancement
  • Body Armour: Max Energy shield, crit reduction possible. Spirit optional
  • Sceptre: +4 minion skills, allies presence damage, spirit, minion life. NO Purity of Fire or ally resistances
  • Rings: 2x Ventor’s Gamble for additional spirit
  • Gloves/Boots: Energy shield and resistances. Craft via Perfect Transmute/Augment T1 + Recombinate
  • Charms: Ignite charm, Right of Passage, Fall Axe for movement speed

Gameplay Tips

  • Weapon swap rhythm: Press weapon swap TWICE to make the wolves respawn. If you spam it or forget, you lose your damage
  • Weapon set configuration: Set 1 = Wolf Pack + explosive Bogfeld active. Set 2 = disabled (spirit at 0) + exposure Bogfeld active
  • Mana flask mandatory: The build has zero mana regen, always keep your flask ready
  • Curse and exposure: Cast Frost Bomb and Thunderstorm on bosses for exposure and Shock
  • Jewels movement speed: Aim for movement speed + companion damage/life on all your sockets for 14%+ total movement speed
  • Sprint + weapon swap: You can weapon swap during sprint and even while knocked down

Wolf Pack and Minion Instability Interaction

The spirit gem Wolf Pack summons 9 wolves that have an exceptional amount of life relative to their spirit cost. This life is spread across 9 creatures, making them an ideal vessel for Minion Instability.

When you add Minion Instability, the wolves explode on death. Combining with Infernal Legion I, they lose their life automatically and eventually explode. This is already effective, but the real Potential comes from Last Gasp.

Last Gasp allows minions to stay alive temporarily after reaching 0 HP. During this window, if you switch to a weapon set where they are disabled, then return to the active set, they respawn and explode again. This cycle can repeat indefinitely as long as you maintain the weapon swap rhythm.

The Bogfeld Commoners

Bogfeld Commoner spectres are the secret behind this build’s single target damage. These creatures have an enormous amount of life relative to their spirit cost, which means massive explosions via Minion Instability.

What makes this spectre unique is that it exists with two different IDs in the game. You can therefore bind two Bogfeld Commoners separately: one on weapon set 1 for the explosions, and one on weapon set 2 for applying Fire Exposure via Infernal Legion I and Potent Exposure.

The exposure spectre doesn’t need a lot of life since its only role is to apply exposure during mapping. Find one with good stats via the Root Regge system, but don’t obsess over this one.

Weapon Set Configuration

The configuration of both weapon sets is crucial for the build to function:

Weapon Set 1 (active): Wolf Pack active with all available spirit. Explosive Bogfeld Commoner active with Minion Instability, Infernal Legion I, Last Gasp, Feeding Frenzy I and Xoph’s Pyre. Blasphemy Temporal Chains active on both sets.

Weapon Set 2 (swap): Wolf Pack and explosive Bogfeld DISABLED (spirit at 0, uncheck the wolf box). Instead, activate the exposure Bogfeld with Infernal Legion I, Potent Exposure and Fire Attunement.

This configuration lets you swap to set 2 (the wolves and explosive spectre disappear), then return to set 1 (they respawn and explode immediately). Meanwhile, the exposure spectre remains active to apply Fire Exposure to enemies.

Passive Tree and Jewels

The Passive Tree focuses on three axes: Energy Shield for survival via Chaos Inoculation, movement speed for mobility, and minion bonuses for damage.

For jewels, consistently aim for movement speed + companion damage or companion life. Ideally you want all three stats plus a hybrid % increased Energy Shield mod via Desecrate. With all sockets optimized, you can reach approximately 14% movement speed bonus from jewels alone.

The Spiral into Depression node offers an additional 3% movement speed. Combined with the 4% and 3% from other movement nodes in the tree, you end up with a character significantly faster than average. For more damage in softcore, you can sacrifice ES nodes to take the minion damage nodes near the starting area.
