Build Overview
The
Blackflame Chaos Chronomancer is one of the most solid league starters of Path of Exile 2 Season 0.5. Designed for both the campaign and map progression, it combines devastating clear speed and very comfortable single target damage throughout the leveling process, without relying on expensive gear to get started.
The core of the build revolves around the chaos duo
Essence Drain +
Contagion:
Contagion infects a first enemy, and that enemy’s death spreads the effect to the entire pack.
Essence Drain amplifies this clear while restoring our resources. For single target early on, we rely on Bone Storm placed on the second weapon set, before transitioning to the true endgame mechanic:
Incinerate powered by the unique ring
Blackflame.
This is what makes the build so elegant: thanks to the «
Blackflame Chaos » scaling, our chaos damage (
Essence Drain /
Contagion) and our fire/ignite damage (
Incinerate) scale together and naturally. A single set of stats improves both pillars of the build, making it extremely smooth to gear up. The template exists in a Chronomancer version (Sorceress, presented here) and a Lich version (Witch), with virtually the same gem skeleton.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Excellent league starter: performs well from Act 1 without any investment, ideal for starting a new season.
- Exceptional clear speed: the
Essence Drain +
Contagion combo melts entire packs in a single cast. - Solid single target that scales up over time: Bone Storm early on, then
Incinerate +
Blackflame for bossing. - Unified scaling: the same stats (chaos damage, ignite) boost both clear and single target.
- Accessible Blackflame ring: it’s a common unique, so the build’s key item drops quickly.
- Versatile: works equally well as Chronomancer (Sorceress) or Lich (Witch).
❌ Weaknesses
- DoT/channelling damage: you need to let effects tick and channel
Incinerate, which requires a bit of patience against bosses. - Managing two weapon sets: swapping between the chaos set and the ignite set adds mental load, especially early on.
- Blackflame ring dependency to unlock the full endgame single target potential.
- Survival to watch early in the game until the healing/leech nodes and
notable Convalescence are in place.
Skill Gem Setup by Step
This build offers 4 progression steps from leveling to the final build. Select a step to see the corresponding skill gem setup.
Campaign Leveling (around lvl 65)
10 skills • 27 gemmesT1-15 Cartes (65-80)
10 skills • 52 gemmesEnd Game (lvl 80-97)
10 skills • 53 gemmesUber Endgame (lvl 97-100)
0 skills • 0 gemmesRecommended Equipment
During leveling, don’t chase perfection: pick up any item that pushes your spells forward. The priority stats on equipment are as follows:
- Ring — Blackflame: the build’s key item. This common unique unlocks the « chaos + ignite » scaling that makes
Incinerate so powerful in the endgame. Keep an eye out for it as early as possible. - Stat to look for: spell damage — boosts our entire arsenal.
- Stat to look for: chaos damage — directly amplifies
Essence Drain and
Contagion. - Stat to look for: +X to all spell skills or +X to chaos spell skills — very efficient gem level gains.
- Two weapon sets: the first focused on chaos skills (
Essence Drain,
Contagion,
Despair), the second focused on ignite magnitude to make
Incinerate hit much harder. - Defenses: prioritize life, Energy Shield and resistances to get through the campaign comfortably.
Gameplay Tips
- Clear loop: cast
Contagion on an enemy, add
Essence Drain, then keep moving — the chaos spread clears the pack on its own while you reposition. - Boss loop: apply
Despair, then
Essence Drain and
Contagion, and finish by channeling
Incinerate. Damage skyrockets once the curse is applied. - Moving Bone Storm tip: cast the skill while walking, then as soon as your movement speed returns to normal, immediately hold the button. You will then channel Bone Storm while maintaining your full movement speed.
- Manage your weapon sets: make sure to properly assign your passives and skills to each set. Set 1 for chaos, Set 2 for Bone Storm then
Incinerate. - Gem upgrade priority:
Incinerate first, then
Essence Drain, then
Contagion, and finally
Despair. - Gem quality priority:
Contagion,
Essence Drain,
Incinerate, then
Despair. - Convalescence: grab this Spirit gem as soon as possible — it’s an instant Energy Shield recharge at the press of a single button.
Campaign Progression, Act by Act
This build is first and foremost a leveling guide. Here is the skill acquisition order to get through the campaign without a hitch:
Upon arriving at Clearfell Encampment, start with
Entangle as your first skill gem: it’s a reliable choice while you wait for the
Essence Drain /
Contagion duo. After the Clearfell chest, pick up
Contagion, then use the support gem from the Witch quest to add
Unleash to
Contagion (your clear speed improves dramatically).
Once the Red Blade boss is defeated (level 3 gem), take
Essence Drain to replace
Entangle. The Druid quest reward gives you Magnified Area, to be linked to
Contagion, and the Eternal’s Place reward is used to slot Swift Affliction into
Essence Drain. As soon as your dexterity allows it, add Chain to
Essence Drain. For your first spirit gem, prefer
Withering Presence (useful in the long run). After the Executioner (level 5 gem), place Bone Storm on your second weapon set for single target.
Act 2 goes by without major changes: keep the same setup and complete your first ascendancy after Halani Gates. In Act 3, hold on to your lesser jewellery orb: once you reach level 9 gems, pick up
Despair then
Incinerate. Socket
Considered Casting and Searing Flame into
Incinerate, and
Heightened Curse into
Despair. This is the point where your single target truly takes off.
Blackflame Scaling: Chaos and Ignite Combined
The strength of this build comes from a simple but devastating idea: making chaos and fire share the same stat foundation.
Essence Drain and
Contagion deal chaos damage, while
Incinerate deals fire damage and ignite. Thanks to the
Blackflame mechanic, both damage types scale in tandem: improving one pillar improves the other.
In practice, the more chaos damage and ignite magnitude you stack, the stronger both your clear (
Essence Drain /
Contagion) AND your single target (
Incinerate) become. That’s what makes this build so smooth to scale: you don’t need to double your investment to cover both clear and boss damage. The unique ring
Blackflame is the piece that makes this synergy fully operational in the late campaign and into maps.
Ascendancy Choice: Chronomancer or Lich
The gem skeleton remains identical between both ascendancies — only the ascendancy nodes change.
As Chronomancer, your first pick is Sands of Time. For the second ascendancy node, take
notable Apex of the Moment to gain an extra aura slot: this smooths out the campaign experience and unlocks very comfortable time-control tools.
As Lich (leech version), you have two options around leech: either the chaos damage node (which requires more flask management early on) or the mana regeneration node for a more relaxed leveling experience. The creator recommends starting with mana regeneration and saving the chaos damage node for later; the second ascendancy then takes the remaining node.
Two Weapon Set Configuration
Around level 40, your passive tree splits into two distinct orientations depending on the active weapon set. Set 1 focuses on chaos skills (
Essence Drain,
Contagion,
Despair) to maximize clear. Set 2 is dedicated to ignite magnitude on the passive tree, which makes
Incinerate hit significantly harder against bosses.
Always make sure to correctly assign your passives, skills, and gems to each weapon set: a wrong assignment and your spells lose a large part of their power. This dual weapon set system is the key that allows the build to excel at both pack clearing and extended boss fights.
