Build Overview
This build combines two spear skills already at the top of the meta —
Twister and
Whirling Slash — on the Mercenary’s Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy. Goratha’s core idea is to exploit the Gemling’s Advanced passive, which grants additional bonus quality to all your gems. In practice:
Whirling Slash gains attack speed,
Twister gains projectile speed, and
Barrage gains a chance not to consume your frenzy charges. Three free bonuses that turn an already solid build into an absurdly fast killing machine.
The scaling of
Twister relies on two levers: duration and projectile speed. Each tornado can hit every 0.66 seconds, so more projectile speed means more chances to strike, and more duration means more tornadoes active at once. Combined with the insane attack speed of
Whirling Slash and the Gemling’s skill speed gain (
notable Integrated Efficiency), you permanently generate a cloud of tornadoes while moving at full speed.
The rotation is straightforward: chain
Whirling Slash three times to reach the maximum number of tornadoes, then trigger
Barrage to repeat them — all while retaining your charges thanks to the Gemling. With an Ordained Spear boasting a very high crit rate and massive flat lightning damage, the build oneshots virtually all content in the game. According to the author himself, it’s a « ridiculous » character he hasn’t even finished optimizing yet.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Absurd clear speed: an extremely fast character, ideal for Mapping
- Colossal damage: oneshots virtually all content in the game
- Very tanky: evasion + deflection (~75-76%), very few deaths even in challenging content
- Excellent screen coverage: monsters die before they can get close
- Unique Gemling synergy: bonus quality on all gems
- Mana never an issue thanks to
Virtuous Barrier and cost management
❌ Weaknesses
- Very expensive spear (~15-20 Divines) and difficult to roll at maximum crit
- Tornadoes don’t bounce in open arenas (certain boss fights with large rooms)
- Costly chase items still missing (Rigwald) to push further optimization
- Known meta archetype: little mechanical novelty beyond the Gemling twist
Skill Gem Setup by Step
This build offers 3 progression variants (Leveling, Maps, Minmax). Choose a variant, then a step to see the corresponding skill gem setup.
Twister Leveling
9 skills • 20 gemmesSet 1
14 skills • 58 gemmesSet 1
18 skills • 65 gemmesRecommended Equipment
- Weapon (spear) : an Ordained Spear is the centerpiece of the build — massive flat lightning damage, high percentage physical damage, and very high critical strike chance. Reaching this level of crit requires the best base (Sky Sliver, very fast) and a top-tier sanctified/divine, which makes it expensive (~15-20 Divines).
- Body Armour : Peridy’s (armour/evasion) with a high chance to avoid damage, and most importantly the Raven Touch mod that allows the item to be anointed — Goratha uses Kite Runner for projectile speed. In endgame, a body armour with very high evasion may be preferable.
- Ring :
The Taming, an insane item that grants all three ground effects (fire, cold, lightning) to your twisters, on top of bonus elemental damage. Practically tailor-made for
Twister. - Amulet :
Yoke of Suffering offers one of the best damage gains, though a rare amulet (evasion, gem levels, rarity) can prove more versatile overall. - Sceptre : a Guiding Palm (the author plays Palm of Freezing for the freeze) paired with
Elemental Conflux, easier to maintain than
Trinity. - Jewel : a Time-Lost Emerald placed in a socket touching ~10 notables, combined with a +4% attack speed per notable bonus — a massive source of attack speed.
- Misc : Mageblood (optional, to keep flask effects permanently active) and a Silver Flask for movement speed.
Gameplay Tips
- Keep Whirling Slash at level 1 : leveling it up causes its mana cost to spike due to how frequently it is used. This is the single most important thing to remember.
- Optimal rotation : use
Whirling Slash three times for maximum twisters, then
Barrage to repeat them, then recast
Twister. - Stack charge retention : between Gemling,
Perpetual Charge and
notable The Fabled Stag, you reach ~69% chance not to consume your frenzy charges. - Defensive approach : evasion + deflection is extremely solid this league. There is no need to aim for CI (Chaos Inoculation) — the armour/evasion hybrid is more than enough.
- Clear speed :
Herald of Ice combined with
Armour Explosion delivers devastating chain reactions on packs. - What to avoid : War Lance, whose priming mechanics are far too cumbersome —
Twister remains far smoother with
The Taming.
The Gemling Legionnaire Ascendancy: the Advanced passive
If most players choose the Gemling Legionnaire, it’s for one node: Advanced. This passive grants bonus quality to each of your gems — not a different quality, an additional quality. For a
Twister +
Whirling Slash build, the returns are massive:
Whirling Slash gains attack speed,
Twister gains projectile speed, and
Barrage recovers its « chance not to consume a charge » quality.
The Gemling also brings
notable Integrated Efficiency (massive skill speed) and an easier path to
Combat Frenzy: the delay between charge gains is reduced, letting you stack frenzy charges much faster. Combined with the charge nodes on the passive tree, you end up with a character that never runs dry on resources and attacks at a staggering rate.
Scaling Twister: duration and projectile speed
Contrary to intuition, the biggest damage multiplier for
Twister isn’t raw increased damage, but duration and projectile speed. Each tornado can only hit once every ~0.66 seconds; increasing projectile speed multiplies the number of potential hits, and increasing duration multiplies the number of tornadoes simultaneously active around you.
This is precisely what the Gemling provides for free through Twister’s bonus quality. You get a hit frequency that, while not quite reaching that of an Abyssal Lich stacking Reaver, remains very competitive — with the added bonus of significantly higher attack speed and movement speed. The result: a screen saturated with tornadoes that shred packs before you even see them.
The Whirling Slash → Barrage → Twister combo
The gameplay sequence is the heart of the build. You cast
Whirling Slash three times to generate the maximum number of tornadoes, then trigger
Barrage.
Barrage repeats your skill by consuming your frenzy charges: with
Twister, each repetition adds even more tornadoes. The Gemling bonus quality means you don’t consume those charges, and by stacking
Perpetual Charge and the
notable The Fabled Stag passive, you climb to ~69% chance to preserve charges.
In practice, you maintain a near-permanent cloud of tornadoes without ever running out of charges, all while continuing to attack and move. This is what gives the build its « melt everything on screen » feel.
The Taming: the item that unlocks the build
The Taming is the ring that makes the entire concept viable. It grants all three ground effects (fire, cold, lightning) to your wind skills like
Twister, where you would otherwise need to invest in separate sources (Ice-Tipped Arrows, Spirit Walker…) at a significant opportunity cost. On top of that, it adds fire, cold, and lightning damage.
Goratha notes that adding this item to the game is almost unreasonable given how powerful Twister already was. That’s what pushed him to abandon his initial idea around War Lance — whose priming mechanics are too cumbersome — in favor of a Twister build centered on
The Taming.
