Build Overview

Woolie’s Legionstriker is one of those rare builds that turns a niche mechanic into a genuine clearing machine. The concept can be summed up in one sentence: a melee build centered on Perfect StrikePerfect Strike played with a single button. No channel to hold, no complex rotation — press Perfect Strike once, instantly gain a max charge, and chain through packs simply by moving. All on a Gemling Legionnaire (Mercenary), in patch 0.5.

The heart of the build is the reworked Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy node, which grants an extra quality bonus to your gems — it doesn’t replace existing quality, it stacks on top. On Perfect StrikePerfect Strike, this quality converts into attack speed, and with enough quality the attack time drops low enough that a single tap triggers a Perfect StrikePerfect Strike at max charge, every single time. That’s exactly what makes the one-button gameplay possible.

Beyond the attack, the build is extremely tanky: around 13,000 armour, block chance pushed to the cap (and beyond) thanks to a shield chosen specifically for its block chance. Woolie puts it better than anyone: since switching to this setup, he simply hasn’t died. You walk, you tap Perfect StrikePerfect Strike, and move on to the next pack. For the first time since patch 0.1, we finally have a real two-handed melee build that actually works.

Strengths / Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • One-button gameplay: a single tap of Perfect StrikePerfect Strike is all it takes for a Perfect StrikePerfect Strike at max charge, every time.
  • Extremely tanky: ~13,000 armour and block chance pushed to the cap (and beyond) via a dedicated shield.
  • Minimal mental load: move and tap — that’s it. Perfect for comfortable long-session farming.
  • Early start: playable from Act 3 onwards (Act 2 with a Trial carry), the ascendancy unlocks early.
  • Budget version: under one Divine Orb with FacebreakerFacebreaker, which carries the entire campaign.
  • True strength-stacking melee: solid strength scaling through Brutus Lead SprinklerBrutus Lead Sprinkler, finally viable since 0.1.

❌ Weaknesses

  • Expensive optimized version: the true endgame setup (Brutus Lead SprinklerBrutus Lead Sprinkler + gear) doesn’t come cheap.
  • Timing dependency: Tasalios RhythmTasalios Rhythm stacks drop if you miss perfect timing (negligible when tapping, but worth knowing).
  • Clunky interaction: Infernal CryInfernal Cry cancels Ancestral CryAncestral Cry — impossible to keep both warcries active at the same time.
  • Build still being refined: this isn’t a definitive complete guide as of the video date; the author is still making adjustments.

Recommended Equipment

  • Weapon (endgame) : Brutus Lead Sprinkler — the unique mace that powers the optimized version. It is a significantly superior strength-stacking item; aim for a version with the lowest possible required level (the requirement depends on the item level and the level of the Molten ShowerMolten Shower skill granted by the weapon).
  • Weapon (budget / leveling) : Facebreaker — a level 1 unique, literally free, that carries the entire campaign and even the early endgame while you wait to get your hands on a Brutus Lead SprinklerBrutus Lead Sprinkler.
  • Shield : Chernobogs PillarChernobogs Pillar — the unique shield for the optimized version, pushing the build to maximum block. Alternatively, any shield with a good block chance will do: block remains the key stat.
  • Loot : for farming enthusiasts, Woolie adds Hilda to maximize the efficiency of rare monsters and therefore map loot — an optional, purely loot-oriented choice.

Gameplay Tips

  • The only button that matters : tap Perfect StrikePerfect Strike once per pack. No need to hold the key — a single tap is enough to get a perfect charge once your attack speed is low enough.
  • Bosses : for bosses, use your warcries first (Ancestral CryAncestral Cry / Infernal CryInfernal Cry) before spamming Perfect StrikePerfect Strike. Note: Infernal CryInfernal Cry cancels Ancestral CryAncestral Cry, do not chain them.
  • Movement : use the roll to move quickly between packs — patch 0.5 has no dedicated sprint key.
  • Priority gem quality : maximize quality on Perfect StrikePerfect Strike (attack speed), BerserkBerserk (maximum rage) and Magma BarrierMagma Barrier (maximum block). This is where the Gemling doubles the effect.

The « one-button » mechanic: Perfect Strike + Gemling quality

The entire build revolves around the interaction between Perfect StrikePerfect Strike and the reworked Gemling Legionnaire ascendancy node. This node grants additional quality effect to your gems, and on Perfect StrikePerfect Strike every 1% of quality grants an extra 2% attack speed. With around 40% total quality (20 on the gem + 20 from global modifiers), the attack time drops low enough that a single tap triggers a full perfect charge every time.

The target threshold is around an attack time of 47 (or lower): below that, Perfect Strike fires instantly on a tap, every single time. No more channelling or holding the button. And each hit deals the equivalent of roughly 1600% damage — which explains the feeling of sheer power despite the absolute simplicity of the gameplay.

Quality-boosted gems: Berserk, Magma Barrier, Herald of Ash

The build’s strength also comes from how the Gemling’s « doubled » quality turns normally mediocre skills into build pillars:

  • Berserk: normally, quality only adds a small amount of rage effect. On Gemling, it grants maximum rage (approximately +16 at 40% quality, +8 at 20%). Given that one point of rage equals 1% more damage and the base maximum is only 30, this is huge.
  • Magma Barrier: a skill almost nobody uses. Its quality normally gives a small amount of block chance; on Gemling, it grants up to +10% maximum block (even +5% at just 20% quality) — more than the best passive tree node dedicated to maximum block (+4).
  • Herald of Ash: provides increased fire damage, amplified while Ancestral CryAncestral Cry is active. It’s the cherry on top — not mandatory, but a welcome addition.

Progression: starting from Act 3 and the weapon transition

You can start playing this build as early as Act 3 (technically Act 2 if you buy a Trial carry to grab your ascendancy points right away). Take Virtuous BarrierVirtuous Barrier first, then the ascendancy node that grants the additional quality. Early on you’ll channel Perfect StrikePerfect Strike a little longer due to lacking attack speed, but the power ramp-up is quick.

On the weapon side, there’s no stress throughout the campaign: a level 1 FacebreakerFacebreaker, or a low-level-requirement Brutus Lead SprinklerBrutus Lead Sprinkler, is more than enough. You switch to the « real » Brutus Lead SprinklerBrutus Lead Sprinkler in endgame, where it becomes a far superior strength-stacking item.

Maximum tankiness: armour, block and survivability

The comfort of playing this build comes as much from its defence as from its offence. The build stacks around 13,000 armour and pushes block to the maximum — and beyond — thanks to a shield chosen for its block chance and the quality of Magma BarrierMagma Barrier pushing the block ceiling even higher. Virtuous BarrierVirtuous Barrier adds yet another defensive layer.

The result: Woolie claims he simply stopped dying once he started playing this setup. You move forward, hit things, tank hits without a second thought. It’s exactly the kind of defensive profile that makes mapping relaxed and risk-free.

Budget version vs optimized version

Good news for your wallet: there is a playable budget version for less than one Divine Orb, built around FacebreakerFacebreaker and cheap gear. It plays exactly the same way — one button — and holds up perfectly fine.

The optimized version, centered around Brutus Lead SprinklerBrutus Lead Sprinkler and more advanced gear, costs significantly more but offers far superior strength stacking. The full written guide on Mobalytics details the various variants, from level 1 in the campaign all the way to the most demanding endgame.
