Build Overview
This No-Grenades Mercenary leveling build by Spud The King takes you from Act 1 all the way to the endgame of Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5 with a simple, reliable, and devastatingly effective recipe: a well-rolled crossbow, a two-button rotation, and a handful of techs that melt bosses in seconds. No gas grenades, no complex timing — you load your bolts, you
Freeze, you shotgun, you move on to the next pack.
The heart of the build revolves around the
Permafrost Bolts +
Fragmentation Rounds combo.
Permafrost Bolts freeze the target, allowing
Fragmentation Rounds (a close-range shotgun hit) to deal massive cold-converted damage to the
Rime target. In Act 2,
Galvanic Shards takes over as the primary clear skill, while we keep the freeze combo for bosses. In Act 3, we unlock an even more powerful combo with
Glacial Bolt +
Living Lightning +
Impale that turns bossing into a one-button spam fest.
The build works with all three Mercenary ascendancies (Tactician, Witchhunter, Gemling Legionnaire), but the author recommends Tactician as a league starter for the node that halves spirit buff reservation — effectively doubling the spirit available for
Herald of Thunder and other auras. A talisman in weapon set 2 adds a bonus damage tech via Bear form and Wyvern form.
Strengths / Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- Perfect league starter: zero currency required, simple two-skill rotation, smooth scaling all the way to endgame.
- No grenades: no timing windows to manage and no risk of a failed detonation, straight-forward gameplay.
- Bosses melted in seconds as early as Act 3 with the
Glacial Bolt +
Living Lightning + Impale combo. - One-button screen clear with
Galvanic Shards +
Fork (Act 4+) and
Herald of Thunder running in the background. - Flexible: compatible with Tactician, Witchhunter, and Gemling Legionnaire; alternative
Shockburst Rounds +
Plasma Blast if the freeze stack playstyle isn’t your thing. - Cold + lightning combo: freeze + shatter for clear, lightning trigger via runes lightning for minions
Living Lightning on bosses.
❌ Weaknesses
- Depends on a rolled crossbow: the upgrade at level 16 then 44 is mandatory; a bad drop slows down the entire progression.
- Slightly complex tech setup: the
Living Lightning + Impale trigger requires several specific support gems and a rune lightning on the weapon. - Plasma Blast has a long wind-up: on the
Shock variant, watch out for boss one-shots during the animation. - Active weapon swap required: the talisman tech (Bear form / Wyvern form) demands a regular weapon swap to benefit from the damage bonus.

- Crossbow (2H) : the core piece of the build. Mandatory upgrade at level 16 (end of Act 2) then at level 44 (post-Act 4). Look for added physical damage, increased physical damage, and ideally added lightning damage (or a lightning rune to socket in it) to trigger
Living Lightning. - Talisman (off-hand, weapon set 2) : the druid weapon used for the bonus damage tech. No need for a high level or premium stats — it’s used for Bear form (early) then Wyvern form (Act 1+). The swap happens on the fly during fights.
- Armor / Gloves / Boots : added physical damage, maximum life, movement speed (priority on boots). During the campaign, use Spud’s shopping list (pasteable into the trader window) to automatically highlight useful items.
- Rings + Amulet : resistances (75% cap at each act), life, attributes required for gems.
- Spirit gems (Heralds & Auras) :
Herald of Thunder as soon as you get the first spirit gem, then
Lingering Illusion (Act 3, 15 spirit) for power charges, and the Mount Carrier node (interlude) for wolf minions. - Lightning rune on the crossbow : essential to trigger
Living Lightning on bosses from Act 3 onwards.
Gameplay Tips
- Act 1-2 Rotation :
Permafrost Bolts to freeze →
Fragmentation Rounds shotgun at close range to burst the frozen target.
Fragmentation Rounds are cold-converted when the target is frozen, which massively boosts damage. - Cycle Crossbow Ammo : exclude Basic Armor from the pool, keep only
Permafrost Bolts and
Fragmentation Rounds. You swap between the two with a single button. - Contagion (Act 1 only) : apply it on the first mob of a pack, shotgun it,
Contagion spreads and clears the pack. Drop it after Act 1. - Freezing Mark (Act 2+ bosses) : apply it on bosses to speed up the freeze and add extra cold damage.
- Active weapon swap : switch to weapon set 2 (talisman, Wyvern form) for the Wren basic attack tech that boosts damage when the enemy is stunned. Combine with the stun build-up node from Act 2.
- Upgrade your crossbow at level 16 : that’s the tipping point. A good crossbow at that level carries you through all of Act 2 and the start of Act 3 without any issues.
- Endgame bossing (Act 3+) : roll in front of the boss with
Lingering Illusion → the boss attacks the illusion → you gain power charges → Wyvern form basic attack +50% lightning damage. Spam
Glacial Bolt +
Entangle to stack Impale via
Living Lightning. - Shock variant : if the freeze stack playstyle isn’t your thing, switch to
Shockburst Rounds +
Plasma Blast.
Plasma Blast applies shock, Shockburst deals massive damage on shocked targets. Watch out for the wind-up of
Plasma Blast in a boss room.
Permafrost + Fragmentation Rotation: the core combo
This is the core of the build from the very start to the end of leveling. The principle is simple:
Permafrost Bolts is a shotgun skill with icy bolts that quickly freezes the target. Once the target is frozen,
Fragmentation Rounds (the second shotgun skill, with physical bolts) deals its damage with a massive extra cold damage bonus against frozen targets. In practice, you fire 2-3
Permafrost Bolts to freeze, shoot one round of Fragmentation Rounds, and the target explodes or shatters.
The support gem
Double Barrel I is essential on
Permafrost Bolts: it loads 2 bolts instead of 1, which doubles the freeze build-up and allows you to freeze in a single attack on medium-sized packs. On
Fragmentation Rounds, we use
Concentrated Area to tighten the shotgun cone and burst bosses in single target.
Elemental Armament I boosts the freeze damage of both skills.
The Talisman + Wren Tech: 50% MORE damage
This is the tech that gives its name to the « 50% MORE DMG Tech » chapter of the video. You equip a talisman (druid weapon) in weapon set 2 — no need for a high-level one, any talisman will do. The Wyvern form transforms your basic attack into Wren, which deals bonus damage when the target is stunned.
The issue in Act 1: you don’t yet have the stun build-up passive nodes for projectiles, so it’s impossible to stack stun on top of freeze. The author recommends waiting until Act 2 where you unlock the stun-projectiles branch. From that point, you can freeze AND stun at the same time, and the tech unlocks a massive damage boost on bosses. Final combo:
Permafrost Bolts (freeze) →
Fragmentation Rounds (shatter damage cold-converted) → swap weapon → basic attack Wren (bonus stun damage).
Endgame Combo: Glacial Bolt + Living Lightning + Impale
Available from Act 3, this combo turns bossing into a single-button spam. The principle:
Glacial Bolt creates frost walls in front of you. You shoot at the frost walls (or
Entangle makes them spawn near the boss and automatically attacks them), which destroys them. With the support gem
Biting Frost I, each destruction consumes a freeze stack to deal significantly more damage.
The next step:
Crystalline Shards applies Impale on every hit from freeze damage. Impale stacks up to several charges, and each charge re-inflicts 30% of the original attack’s damage (pre-mitigation) when the enemy takes additional hits. That’s where
Living Lightning comes in: it’s a trigger minion that hits continuously whenever you deal lightning damage. With a rune lightning on the crossbow, every shot triggers
Living Lightning → the minions hit the boss → each hit consumes an Impale stack → colossal damage.
Priority support gems for
Glacial Bolt: Multishot (more frost walls per second),
Biting Frost I (consumes freeze for damage),
Crystalline Shards (Impale),
Living Lightning (trigger minions),
Fortress I (
Ice Shards in a circle for close range boss).
Entangle is just used to trigger wall destructions:
Magnified Area I +
Prolonged Duration I +
Biting Frost I are enough.
Recommended Ascendancy: Tactician
The author tested all three ascendancies and concludes that Tactician is the best league starter pick, mainly for a specific node that halves the spirit reservation of buffs. In practice, you get twice as much spirit available for
Herald of Thunder,
Lingering Illusion, and other reservation skills.
Witchhunter and Gemling Legionnaire work too, and the gem and support gem setup stays the same. You can always switch ascendancy later if you want to experiment. But early in the league, when spirit is precious and every point counts, Tactician is the safest pick.
Mount Carrier Interlude: the 70% damage wolfpack
After the final boss of Act 4, you enter the interludes. The author recommends starting with Mount Carrier, as the boss of this interlude (a wannabe viper) drops the final permanent spirit gem. With this spirit, you can summon a pack of wolves that follow you permanently.
These wolves are minions, and thanks to a key passive node in the build, you gain nearly +70% increased damage whenever a minion is nearby. With the wolfpack never leaving your side, the buff is permanent. Combined with the
Living Lightning minions from the boss combo, you are constantly at maximum damage buff. This is the last piece before full endgame.
