Build Overview

The CoC CometComet « Chonk » is the most devastating archetype from Path of Exile 2 patch 0.4, and it returns in force for patch 0.5 in a reworked form. The concept is as simple as it is brutal: SparkSpark strikes on a loop, every critical hit triggers Cast on CriticalCast on Critical, which in turn summons CometComet — ice meteors that obliterate the entire screen. In terms of damage, this build was barely touched by nerfs: only its sustain method was revised.

The real change in 0.5 is mana management. Previously, the archetype relied on leech (mana on hit) via Covenant or Blood Mage — both of which have since been corrected. The build therefore becomes a pure mana stacker: you build a colossal mana pool (8,000 to 9,000 points) and then convert it into a sustain engine through Remnants, which were significantly buffed in 0.5. The creator’s tagline sums it up perfectly: « mana is a choice. »

In practice, damage is never the concern on this build — it’s more than sufficient — the real challenge is never running out of mana. Paired with ArchmageArchmage which quadruples damage at the cost of higher mana expenditure, the Chonk CoC CometComet is designed to reach an absurd mana throughput (up to 15,000 mana per second) that makes spending virtually unlimited. A true powerhouse of the new season, accessible as early as day 3 on a reasonable budget.

Strengths / Weaknesses

✅ Strengths

  • Colossal damage: the SparkSparkCast on CriticalCast on CriticalCometComet combo decimates packs and bosses alike — one of the best archetypes from 0.4 that was never nerfed offensively
  • Archmage scaling Archmage: multiplies damage by ~4x by converting your mana pool into raw power
  • « Infinite » mana: Remnants buffed in 0.5 (up to 290% effect) regenerate more than 100% of the mana pool per second
  • Excellent clear speed: SparkSpark clears maps effortlessly
  • Accessible weapon crafting: the main staff can be crafted in a near-deterministic way for just ~1 divine
  • Reasonable budget: full version estimated at ~25 divines as early as day 3

❌ Weaknesses

  • Mana sustain requires mastery: this is THE challenge of the build — you must reach a precise Remnant effect threshold (~260) to never run out of mana
  • Painful leveling: the martial artist (Monk) progression is very rough in Act 1, before obtaining Hollow Palm
  • Conceptual build: still being finalized by the creator, expect to adjust in-game during the first days of the season
  • Scaling-dependent: relies on specific tree nodes and mana modifiers to function at full capacity

Recommended Equipment

  • Weapon (Staff): the centerpiece — look for mana, critical, and cast speed. It can be crafted in a near-deterministic way via desecrate + greater sorcery essence + Kiral currency + Abyssal Echo, for around 1 divine only
  • Amulet: the most expensive piece (~5 to 10 divines), due to the spirit needed to hit the aura reservation breakpoint
  • Helmet & Body Armour: budget around 2 to 3 divines each, focused on mana and defenses
  • Jewels: 2-stat mana-focused, highly upgradeable on day 3 (desecrate guarantees a targeted modifier)
  • Target pool: ~8,000 to 9,000 mana on a realistic early-season character, without chase items (adorned, voices, MegalomaniacMegalomaniac)

Gameplay Tips

  • Stack mana: aim for 8,000 to 9,000 mana — this is the foundation of both sustain and damage through ArchmageArchmage
  • Reach the Remnant breakpoint: ~260 total effect (100 base + 50 ascendancy + 40 Remnant + 70 on the tree) to turn 20% mana leech into over 100% of your mana pool per second
  • Activate Archmage: +90% mana cost but x4 damage — a much better deal once your mana sustain is sorted
  • Rotation: hold SparkSpark continuously to trigger Cast on CriticalCast on CriticalCometComet, and place Sigil of PowerSigil of Power to boost damage on priority targets
  • Leveling: level as a Martial Artist then unlock Hollow Palm, and use Stone Gauntlets to get through the early game comfortably before transitioning into CoC CometComet

The Mana Problem and the Chonk Solution

To really understand what makes this build tick, you need to know what changed between 0.4 and 0.5. In 0.4, CoC CometComet was one of the most popular and powerful builds in the game. On the offensive side, it was barely nerfed at all. What GGG changed was its sustain source: leech was the backbone of the archetype, fueled by Covenant or Blood Mage. Both were corrected.

The build isn’t dead — it simply has a different problem now. Mana expenditure is still massive, but you need to find another way to sustain it. That’s where the new approach comes in: turning mana into a choice rather than a constraint. Instead of suffering through mana drain, you build a character capable of regenerating more mana than it spends — allowing you to use it freely and aggressively.

Mana Stacking: Aiming for 15,000 Mana per Second

The technical core of the build revolves around Remnants, which were significantly buffed in 0.5. They now grant 20% leech of your maximum mana, and this number scales. By stacking Remnant effect, you can reach up to 290% effect, pushing leech to roughly 58% of maximum mana. That percentage is further amplified by a series of passive tree nodes dedicated to mana leeched.

The result: you can easily surpass 100% of your mana pool regenerated per second. Leech triggers every 1.2 seconds, and with a pool of 8,000 to 9,000 mana, you can aim for up to 15,000 mana per second. That’s often a surplus — far more than needed to sustain even the most aggressive spending. The target Remnant effect threshold is around 260 total, split between base (100), ascendancy (50), the Remnants themselves (40), and the tree (70).

Archmage: Quadrupling Your Damage

Once mana sustain is sorted, ArchmageArchmage becomes the build’s secret weapon. This mechanic adds damage proportional to your mana pool, but also increases skill costs. In this setup, activating ArchmageArchmage raises the cost of SparkSpark from roughly 378 to 700 mana — only +90% in cost — while quadrupling your damage.

The math is undeniable: as long as your sustain holds, ArchmageArchmage is actually more efficient — you gain far more in damage than you lose in mana consumption. This is exactly why mana stacking and ArchmageArchmage form such a devastating duo: the more mana you have, the harder you hit — and the faster you regenerate.

Leveling Plan and Weapon Crafting

On the progression side, leveling is done as a Martial Artist (the standard leveling approach for the Monk). Let’s be honest: Act 1 is quite painful, until you get Hollow Palm, which makes everything much more comfortable. A few Stone Gauntlets are then enough to cruise through the early campaign, before switching to the CoC CometComet setup once the new ascendancy is unlocked.

The other great news is the weapon crafting. The main staff — targeting mana, crit, and cast speed — is crafted in an almost deterministic way: a desecrate for the mana mod, a greater sorcery essence, the Kiral currency, and an Abyssal Echo. The author crafted about a dozen weapons of this type last season for a few dozen exalts each. Expect around 1 divine for a perfectly functional staff — one of the most cost-efficient weapons to craft in the game.
