WoW Forever Mage: Every Reworked Spell and Talent

WoW Forever Mage: A Comeback Six Years Later

Six years after the video on Mage AoE grind leveling, the one that relaunched the Kami Labs channel, Kami returns to the WoW Forever Mage. This second episode in the series on reworked spells and talents covers the three specs, then the most interesting races, and ends on the touchy question: does AoE farming survive Forever? The server is still in beta, so everything below can still change.

The numbers come from our Grimoire, which compares every spell to its Vanilla version, cross-checked with wowforevertalents.com and the Forever branch of Wowhead. The full talent trees can be found in our talent calculator, and the full video is still available on YouTube.

New Arcane Spells for the WoW Forever Mage

First addition, a new teleport: Teleport: Dalaran, available at level 50. Kami thinks it’s mostly tied to the new race, though Kami isn’t sure every mage gets access to it.

The real highlight is Arcane Blast. Each cast increases the damage of your other spells by 10%, but Arcane Blast’s mana cost climbs by 175% each time, up to four stacks. The more you chain it, the harder you hit, and the faster your mana bar melts.

On the quality-of-life side, Arcane Intellect now lasts an hour, up from 30 minutes on Vanilla. Same logic as the paladin’s blessings, also bumped up to an hour. Dampen Magic now reduces magic damage taken by 135 and healing received by 270, up from 90 and 180 before. Amplify Magic follows the same path, with 113 and 225 instead of 75 and 150.

One last detail group mages will like: Conjure Water now lists 150 bottles at max rank, up from 10. At low level Kami didn’t notice an obvious difference, the gain might show up at higher ranks.

Arcane Talents and Mana Management

Missile Barrage didn’t exist on Classic. Arcane Blast has a 40% chance to trigger it, and Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt 20%. The effect halves the channel time of your next Arcane Missiles, makes them free and speeds up the firing rate. Kami already loved this talent in PvP on Wrath of the Lich King.

Further up the tree, Arcane Geometry adds 6 yards of range to arcane spells, and Arcane Blast unlocks directly in the tree. Improved Channeling gives 100% protection to your Arcane Missiles against damage interrupts, and 70% to your Arcane Blast.

On the defensive side, Magic Absorption increases all resistances by 10 and always returns 2% of total mana when a spell is fully resisted. The one-second cooldown, absent from the very first Vanilla version, stays in place.

Another piece of good news, mana regen gets a big boost. Arcane Meditation goes from 15% to 50% mana regen while casting. Mage Armor, available on Forever, jumps from 30% to 50% and keeps its 15 points of resistance to all schools. Arcane Shielding reduces mana lost under Mana Shield by 33% and increases Mage Armor’s resistances by 50%. With well-optimized gear, a very mana-hungry arcane mage should still be able to go the distance.

New Fire Spells for the Mage

The big new addition to Fire is called Frostfire Bolt. It counts as both fire and frost damage, and hits whichever of the target’s two resistances is weaker. It therefore benefits from talents in both trees, including Ice Shards, which doubles the bonus damage from frost critical hits and stays accessible very low in the Frost tree.

Almost every other fire spell finally shows its formula. Pyroblast now lists 100% spell power, where Vanilla gave a fixed range of 716 to 890. On a spell with such a long cast time, with all the spell power added to Forever’s gear, that promises some very big numbers.

Fire Talents and Chained Crits

The fire talents make you want to reroll. Wake of Fire cuts the cooldown of Fire Blast by 2 seconds, and killing a target that counts increases the crit chance of your next Fire Blast by 50% for 20 seconds. For Kami, that targets green-level mobs and above, as well as players who grant honor.

Hot Streak triggers on non-periodic critical hits from Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch. Each stack cuts the cast time of Pyroblast by 25%, up to three times. So no instant Pyroblast. An instant proc would have been broken with this version’s talents and gear, but a well-prepared Pyroblast can already wipe a player off the map.

Burning Soul gives your fire spells a 70% chance to avoid being delayed by damage, and cuts their threat by 30%. Improved Fireball also shortens the cast time of the new Frostfire Bolt. Incineration goes up to a 6% crit chance, and Combustion now holds up to four critical hits instead of three.

The most interesting part, according to Kami, will be hunting for synergies between Fire and Frost, or even Arcane. The PvE Fire Mage builds already published give you a starting point.

Frost Spells and Talents in PvP

Frost’s major change is Ice Lance, unlocked by talent. It deals 300% bonus damage to frozen targets and combos with Fingers of Frost, which makes the target count as frozen for your next two spells. No internal cooldown: you can chain it while chasing a rogue, who will never be able to stealth again. For Kami, this is one of the strongest spells for the WoW Forever Mage in PvP.

The spec has barely been weakened. Shatter keeps its 50% crit chance on frozen targets, so it also applies to Ice Lances cast under Fingers of Frost. Careful though, a merely slowed target doesn’t count as frozen. You need a Frost Nova or a Fingers of Frost proc.

The nerfs hit the slows, and that’s what made people think farming was dead after BlizzCon. Improved Blizzard now slows by 40%, so does Cone of Cold, down from 50% over eight seconds before, and Permafrost now only adds 10%. Back then, a mage perched on a tower could slow around fifteen players by 75% in a battleground. It’s still very strong, just closer to the game’s other slows.

Good news on defense: Ice Block has a 5-minute cooldown, not 10 like on Vanilla, and Cold Snap can still reset it. Ice Barrier absorbs roughly as much as before.

Best Races for the WoW Forever Mage

New in this second episode: an opinion on races. In PvE, Kami sees Gnome in the lead, thanks to its new ability Eureka!. It reduces the cost of your next three spells and increases their damage by 10%. Based on in-game reports, the cost reduction varies by class, and it reportedly reaches 50% for the mage. On a Pyroblast or already-stacked Arcane Blasts, the mana savings become huge, to the point that Kami expects a nerf.

Gnome also keeps Expansive Mind, which now increases maximum mana by 5%, and Escape Artist, which breaks roots and slows. Details for every race are on our racial abilities page.

Kami himself will go with an Orc, a race now open to mages. Blood Fury increases spell power by 10% for 15 seconds, with a two-minute cooldown that lines up well with trinkets, and Shatter Curse reduces magic damage taken.

Farming and Leveling the WoW Forever Mage

Do the weakened slows stop you from farming like before? No. The spell power gained on Forever is so high that farming should actually become easier. Dungeons, on the other hand, have been nerfed on several fronts, including experience. The Zul’Farrak tombs shouldn’t be farmable like before, except maybe for the chests or a few solo challenges. We already covered this debate in our article on Mage AoE farming.

Out in the open world, it’s a different story. With a bit of gear, Kami estimates you’ll quickly reach 30, 40, even 60% extra spell power while leveling. Between Cone of Cold, Flamestrike and Frost, monster packs will melt. A V2 of the AoE grind leveling guide could happen, but not before January or February 2027: Kami’s feral druid, the guild, the site and Path of Exile 2’s 1.0 release in December come first.

Builds and What’s Next in the Series

To get hands-on, three PvE builds are already live: Arcane Mage, Fire Mage and Frost Mage. The previous episode covered the Druid’s reworked spells and talents.
