Frost Mage Build — WoW Forever Talents & Guide

Frost Mage, the Control and Survival Specialization

Frost Mage is, in vanilla, the specialization of battlefield control more than raw damage. Frost Nova and Cone of Cold freeze, Frostbite adds a chance to freeze on every cold effect, and Shatter turns a frozen enemy into an almost guaranteed critical hit. Ice Block and Ice Barrier also make it the Mage’s survival specialization: few deaths for a player who masters kiting. In PvP, it’s the go-to choice: freeze, back off, freeze again. In PvE, it’s mainly used to control adds while Fire or Arcane carry the damage. It’s a specialization that demands patience and timing more than gear, the opposite of Fire Mage.

What Forever Changes in the Frost Tree

Out of nineteen talents, nine are reworked and two are entirely new, and none disappear. The two new additions, Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost, form a pair familiar to players of later expansions: Fingers of Frost gives a chance, on every cold effect, to treat your next spell as if the target were frozen, and Ice Lance deals triple damage against a frozen target. Combined with Shatter, already present in vanilla, they give Frost Mage a real burst button on a frozen target, something the specialization never had as such, when freezing mostly served to control rather than to hit hard. The other nine changes adjust percentages for resistance, range, and cooldowns.
