The WoW Forever level 40 milestone unlocks two things: the first mount and dual specialization (two talent sets you can switch between). The guide from Method by Old Guardian, dated 21 October 2026, puts the mount at 100 gold. Blizzard confirms dual spec at level 40 in its class deep dives, without giving the price. All figures come from the beta and may change at launch.

WoW Forever level 40: the mount costs 100 gold

Before level 40, everything is done on foot. Only druids and shamans have a travel form, according to Karsten Scholz of MeinMMO, who advises budgeting about 100 gold for the mount and the riding skill, and avoiding unnecessary purchases from class trainers until then.

Method, Old Guardian, 21 October 2026: the guide detailing the cost and requirements of the first mount.

Method’s detail fits in four lines. The Apprentice Riding skill costs 100 gold at 40 and is bought from your own race’s riding trainer. It includes the first mount, in a color of your choice, which grants 60% extra speed. Each additional color costs 20 gold. Mounts of other races stay locked until Exalted reputation (the last standing level with a faction) with them.

This mechanism follows Burning Crusade. Blizzard’s 13 September panel describes it this way: “shifting the up-front mount cost into training and granting a mount when players learn the riding skill”. The official recap gives no price. The rest of the panel is summarized in our BlizzCon deep dive recap.

Discounts and class mounts

At level 40, two discounts exist according to Method. Honored reputation with your home faction takes 10% off the riding skill and off your race’s mounts. The Bartering Legacy talent (Legacy is the system of permanent account bonuses) takes up to 10% off mounts, but not off the skill. Together they reach 20% on a mount, a saving that only applies to extra colors since the first one is included in the 100 gold.

Some classes skip the price. Alliance paladins receive a free mount through the quest The Tome of Nobility, started from the Mystic Ward in Ironforge or the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind. The equivalent Horde quest could not be tested in the beta, Method notes. Warlocks of both factions get theirs from Strahad Farsan in Ratchet, at level 40. The epic class mounts, at 60, require reagents that cost “hundreds of gold” according to the guide.

Two store mounts exist at launch, again according to Method: Veteran Adventurer’s Loyal Companion and Cerulean Prideclaw. Beta datamines list the second at level 60, and whether it is usable at 40 is unknown until launch.

For the Forsaken paladin, undead horse mounts in gilded armor leaked from the beta files on 17 September, detailed in our article on the Forsaken paladin mounts. The leak says nothing about the level at which they are obtained.

Dual specialization: level 40, price unknown

Dual spec has an official source. In Blizzard’s class deep dives, the sentence appears identically for the rogue and warlock pair (7 October) and for the paladin (15 October): “Dual Specialization also becomes available at level 40”. These pages give neither a price nor a procedure.

On the price of dual spec, the site Buyboost, in a text from October 2026, writes that Blizzard has not confirmed every detail of dual spec, price included. No source consulted gives an amount for Forever. A precise figure found elsewhere is not confirmation: in Season of Discovery (a Classic version), dual spec cost 50 gold at level 40, according to Warcraft Tavern, but Forever may set a different price.

To prepare both talent sets, the WoW Forever talent calculator lets you test builds, and our opinion on each class is in which class to pick in WoW Forever.

Gold budget from level 40 to level 60

This budget only keeps published amounts. The total at 40 is bounded by the mount price, with dual spec remaining an unknown.

That is 100 gold to gather for level 40, and at least 1,200 gold at 60 for the skill and one epic mount, before discounts. The 1,000 gold of level 60 weigh ten times the first milestone. To gather them, the choice of profession matters: it is detailed in our profession pick by class. Store-bought mounts do not exempt you from the skill, Method warns. Flying does not appear in any of the sources.
