Headhunting
thrown spears gap-closer berserker rush

A spear-thrower's tree layered on a melee core: Impaling Spear and Berserker Rush let you open at range, close hard, and finish in melee.

Plays as momentum DPS — you commit to a target and ride the rush window.

Retail Feel

Closest to current Survival Hunter, with a Feral Druid's survivability bolted on. Like Survival, it's a melee/ranged hybrid built around thrown weapons and bleeds (Throw Weapon, Barbed Spear, Impaling Spear), running on a rogue-style resource (Energy) rather than mana — but the self-healing goes further: the Agility-scaling, crit-capable Born in Blood HoT reads much more like Feral Druid's heal-through-damage survivability model.

Excels at holding ground thanks to the self-generated Born in Blood soaking up sustained damage, while Berserker Rush gives an engage/disengage on a soft target. No anti-CC at all, though — a hard-CC chain fully lands.

How is this number calculated?

World bosses only (Conquest of Azeroth has no instanced raid yet) — Snowgrave, Setis, Lord Kazzak, Azuregos, The Will of Soggoth, Kaldros Depthbreaker.

These numbers come from Ascension Logs’ public combat logs, not an in-house guess.

The index compares each spec to the median player — the one sitting exactly in the middle of the ranking — on the same boss and the same group format: 1.00 matches that median player, 1.40 means 40% more damage than them. Only each player’s best fight counts, never their average — otherwise a player posting fifty fights would count as much as fifty different players, and averaging would mostly reward beginners still learning the spec rather than those who’ve mastered it. The comparison always happens on the same boss and the same format: a two-minute fight and a seven-minute one aren’t comparable, and a flex raid doesn’t give the same support as a 25-man.

Tiers (S, A, B…) aren’t picked by hand: the cutoffs are calculated from the real spread of every measured spec. A spec under 15 distinct players or 30 fights isn't ranked at all, rather than given a made-up grade.

A two-stream rotation (ranged throws + melee axe) that asks you to juggle Energy and rush windows without stacking multiple resource systems.

Leveling Guide

Plays as a ranged-leaning Agility/bleed DPS: opens fights at range with Headhunter's Spear/Barbed Spear, stacks bleeds via Gutspiller and Puncture Wounds, and lets Frothing Savage/Entrails cash in extra crit and Agility off its own DoTs while Axe Twirling clears adds.

Defiance and Ogre's Endurance carry it through solo/duo leveling without a healer. In groups it's a sustained ranged/melee-hybrid DPS whose utility is Manhunter's party crit buff and bonus damage to Humanoids.

Gutspiller
The whole tree (Guts Splatter, Entrails, To The Bone, Payback) is built to amplify this one bleed-and-burst axe throw — taking it early shapes the rest of the build.

Rotation
  1. Core loop — ranged spear/axe throws that stack bleed (Puncture Wounds) and feed the Born in Blood self-heal, with a melee swap into Berserker Axe while Enraged.
  2. Signature (Headhunter): Reduces the Energy cost of Throw Weapon, Maiming Spear, and Whirling Advance by -15.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
  • Deep self-sustain: Born in Blood generated by Barbed Spear crits (Furious Berserker) and by Berserker Rush (Vengeance For Zul'jin), made Agility-scaling and crit-capable by Brutal Form, and amplified by Savage and Bloody Fighter — you rarely need a healer to stay in a fight.
  • Ramping bleed pressure: Puncture Wounds stacks bleeds on Spear crits, backed by Gutspiller/Guts Spilled and Impaling Spear's Spear Shards shatter — genuine damage-over-time that keeps ticking through movement.
  • Flexible engage/disengage kit: Berserker Rush (root-charge + leap-back), Spite (burst then fall back) and Maiming Spear kiting let you dictate range in a way pure-melee specs can't, plus Manhunter's party crit buff on top.
Weaknesses
  • No anti-CC at all: nothing in the kit breaks, immunizes, or shortens stuns/roots/snares, so a hard-CC chain fully lands and you must out-survive it rather than avoid it.
  • Thin instant self-healing: Ancestral Roar (a burst self-heal, but enrage-gated and a pick from the shared class pool) is the only quick button; the rest is the Born in Blood HoT, so getting caught before it's rolling (or it falling off) leaves you close to a normal HP pool against burst.
  • One-directional, conditional armor-shred: Berserker Axe/Guts Splatter/Hunting for Sport ignore enemy armor only during specific windows (Enraged, Gutspiller applied, or Unbridled Rage active), so penetration comes and goes with your rotation state.
