C-TIER | BUILD KNIGHT OF XOROTH HELLFIRE (@ascensionsidekick) | ASCENSION CoA

Build Knight of Xoroth Hellfire Ascension CoA
Hellfire
demonic fire burns caster knight

Total command of hellfire: an extremely dense DoT-caster kit (6 active burn effects) riding a hybrid melee/caster knight chassis.

The idea is simple to state: ignite everything, keep every burn rolling, then detonate heavy payoffs fueled by the Demonfire stacks banked in combat.

Retail Feel

Closest to Vengeance Demon Hunter, re-tuned as a pure damage spec rather than a tank. The pieces line up: a literally-named Infernal Strike engage, an Immolation-Aura-style pulsing AoE burn (Pestilence of Apocalypse plus Hellfire Form's tick), a Soul-Fragment-style secondary resource generated by a filler and spent on finishers (Demonfire, generated by Seeking Flame/Infernal Strike, spent by Hellmaw/Skulltaker/Flames of Xoroth/Hellfire Form), and a Metamorphosis-style transformation cooldown (Hellfire Form). Where it diverges hard is defense: Vengeance's actual survival kit — Demon Spikes, Fiery Brand's self-heal, Soul Cleave lifesteal — simply isn't present here, with no self-shield to stand in for it, making it far squishier than the retail spec it otherwise resembles.

Swings BG fights mainly through AoE burn and burst: Pestilence of Apocalypse makes a clump take more Fire damage from you while Hellfire Form, Flames of Xoroth, and Unleash Hellfire detonate on the pack. In 1vX, Seeking Flame's slow and Chainwhip's silence-interrupt help, but real control is thin — no fear, no knockback, no self-speed disengage.

How is this number calculated?

World bosses only (Conquest of Azeroth has no instanced raid yet) — Snowgrave, Setis, Lord Kazzak, Azuregos, The Will of Soggoth, Kaldros Depthbreaker.

These numbers come from Ascension Logs’ public combat logs, not an in-house guess.

The index compares each spec to the median player — the one sitting exactly in the middle of the ranking — on the same boss and the same group format: 1.00 matches that median player, 1.40 means 40% more damage than them. Only each player’s best fight counts, never their average — otherwise a player posting fifty fights would count as much as fifty different players, and averaging would mostly reward beginners still learning the spec rather than those who’ve mastered it. The comparison always happens on the same boss and the same format: a two-minute fight and a seven-minute one aren’t comparable, and a flex raid doesn’t give the same support as a 25-man.

Tiers (S, A, B…) aren’t picked by hand: the cutoffs are calculated from the real spread of every measured spec. A spec under 15 distinct players or 30 fights isn't ranked at all, rather than given a made-up grade.

How is this number calculated?

Mythic dungeons only — Ascension CoA has no Mythic+ tier yet (216 tracked encounters).

These numbers come from Ascension Logs’ public combat logs, not an in-house guess.

The index compares each spec to the median player — the one sitting exactly in the middle of the ranking — on the same boss: 1.00 matches that median player, 1.40 means 40% more damage than them. Only each player’s best fight counts, never their average — otherwise a player posting fifty fights would count as much as fifty different players, and averaging would mostly reward beginners still learning the spec rather than those who’ve mastered it. The comparison always happens on the same boss: 92.4% of dungeon fights are played in 5-player groups, and splitting by group size as well would discard more usable damage rows (4.5% lost against 1.4% when comparing by boss alone) for zero additional publishable spec — group size is therefore not part of the comparison.

Tiers (S, A, B…) aren’t picked by hand: the cutoffs are calculated from the real spread of every measured Dungeon spec — this column has its own distribution, it doesn’t reuse Raid’s cutoffs. A spec under 15 distinct players or 30 fights isn't ranked at all, rather than given a made-up grade.

Each performance above links to its own real combat report. Ascension Logs, however, doesn’t offer a rankings page covering every Mythic dungeon — unlike Raid, there’s no « View the source rankings » button here.

The difficulty isn't a tricky rotation — it's managing the Demonfire stack: deciding when to dump it into a big hit (Hellmaw, Skulltaker) versus banking it for a Hellfire Form window takes fight-reading, especially with almost no defensive safety net of its own.

Leveling Guide

While leveling, the loop is already the endgame loop: open with Seeking Flame (ranged, builds Demonfire, slows) or Infernal Strike to engage, keep Pestilence of Apocalypse up for the damage boost, then weave filler and dump stacks into Hellmaw or Skulltaker depending on the target.

In groups, the kit has neither healing nor a defensive of its own — safety comes from killing fast and slowing threats, not from soaking damage, so avoid pulls that assume you can tank.

Burning Power
The stat-conversion node the entire spec's damage math is built on: 100% of Intellect converted into Attack Power, 50% of Strength converted into Spell Damage.

Rotation
  1. Core loop — bank Demonfire stacks via Seeking Flame and Infernal Strike, then detonate them in a big hit.
  2. Signature (Greater Imp): summons a Greater Imp with strong single-target damage and control abilities, and increases your expertise by 10.
MaintainKeep Pestilence of Apocalypse up at all times — the +Fire-damage-taken field it projects onto nearby targets is the base of all your AoE damage.

Fire/Shadowflame DoT-weave caster (Seeking Flame, Hellmaw, and Calamity all scale off Spell Power), but Burning Power converts Strength into Spell Damage and Cinderblade converts Intellect into crit rating while adding a flat 6% spell hit bonus. Strength is therefore the primary attribute behind Spell Power, while the spell-hit cap is mostly closed by that flat bonus rather than a dedicated conversion. PvP order reshuffled to lead with Resilience then Stamina.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Strengths
  • Demonfire-scaling burst — Hellmaw, Skulltaker, and Flames of Xoroth all hit harder per Demonfire consumed, and Hellfire Form opens a Fire-damage/crit window, so a banked Demonfire dump lands real damage.
  • Real AoE pressure — Pestilence of Apocalypse's +Fire-damage-taken field plus Hellstorm, Hellfire Form's pulsing burn, Hellmaw's Hellfire Explosion, and Unbound Inferno give genuine pack-clearing and BG-clump pressure, not just single-target damage.
  • Sticky melee-caster hybrid — Infernal Strike engages while generating Demonfire, and Seeking Flame's slow lets it keep pressure up at close-to-mid range even when a target tries to peel off, though it has no true gap-closer speed proc.
Weaknesses
  • No healing or lifesteal in the spec's own kit and only one incidental absorb (Flamewrath's on-hit shield) — a real defensive has to be taken from the class kit (Suffuse or Black Shield), which competes with damage picks.
  • Zero anti-CC and almost no control of its own — no cleanse, no trinket-equivalent, no hard CC or silence beyond Seeking Flame's slow; a chain-CC opener has no answer.
  • Rage-gated, close-range burst with real downtime — Hellfire Form and the Demonfire dumps are the fight-swinging tools, but Rage generation depends on staying engaged, so getting kited or CC'd out of range stalls the whole engine at once.
