Path of Exile 2’s 0.5.5 update arrives on September 4, 2026 at 10 PM French time, 1 PM Pacific, carried by the Forbidden Rites event. The most useful detail for anyone already running a build: according to Maxroll’s analysis, Grinding Gear Games isn’t touching any class, skill, or passive tree balance in this version.
We published yesterday the article that details the full content of this update; this one answers a narrower question. You have a build that’s running, what do these few weeks change for you before the 1.0 release, planned for December 11, 2026? The answer fits in one sentence: nothing breaks, but nothing settles either.
Why Path of Exile 2 isn’t rebalancing anything in 0.5.5
The reason is spelled out clearly by the studio, and picked up by Maxroll in an article by Cptn Garbage: « Citing a lack of development time to reach a satisfying result, no balance changes will be made in the upcoming 0.5.5 Patch. »

All the planned balance work is therefore pushed to version 1.0, on December 11, 2026. In practical terms, Path of Exile 2’s classes, skills, and talent trees stay exactly as you know them. A build that works today will work identically on September 4, with no surprises or last-minute adjustments to expect. So you can keep playing your current run without worry, and you have no reason to rework your passive tree or your skill gems before the update.
What’s changing anyway
No rebalancing doesn’t mean nothing changes. Soul Cores, those cores you socket into gear to add properties to it, are being buffed, and new models are making their appearance. It’s a net gain for anyone building their gear around them.
The Trial of Chaos, a room-based trial where you put your run on the line, is being overhauled in depth. You can now leave between two rooms and resume your attempt later, where the old format forced you to push through everything in one go. Progression now climbs to room 30, up from 10 before, and the Trialmaster only freezes time once per attempt. More than ten new Wager modifiers, bets that spice up each room in exchange for better rewards, join the rotation, and every room cleared now grants a bonus chest. Rewards from the trial become exclusively currency and Soul Cores.
One change is going almost unnoticed and deserves better. The item earned in Rituals is applied directly to a node on the Atlas, the endgame world map, to make the Wildwood appear there. That is a direct action on the map, where the game previously went through tablets.
Expedition content, an exploration and digging activity, moves from the Runes of Aldur league into the base game: everyone now has access to it, not just players in that league, which keeps running in parallel without interruption.
The official announcement, and what’s still missing
Grinding Gear Games detailed these changes in a presentation published on August 27 on the game’s official forum. The event has its own economy, starting from scratch: no currency or items accumulated elsewhere carry over. One detail is worth flagging: the studio has announced no end date. The one-month figure circulating everywhere, ours included yesterday, comes from press coverage rather than from a statement. Nothing rules out the event running until December 11, alongside the Runes of Aldur league.

One point is worth stating: the full 0.5.5 patch notes aren’t published yet as we write these lines. The studio announced they would come out the week before launch. Everything above comes from that August 27 presentation and Maxroll’s coverage of it; the fine, line-by-line detail is still to come.
A deceptive view of 1.0
It would be tempting to conclude that 0.5.5 offers a good window to spot the builds that will dominate at the 1.0 release. That’s wrong, and it’s exactly the reason your current builds stay valid: all the rebalancing has been pushed past that date. A build dominant in 0.5.5 dominates before that rebalancing, not after. Nothing guarantees it keeps its place once Grinding Gear Games has touched Path of Exile 2’s classes, on December 11.
There is a bigger problem. By declining to rebalance now, the studio gives up months of testing by millions of players. They are the ones who, in practice, stress a balance pass and report what breaks. The 1.0 changes will therefore land without having gone through that. For a game still in early access, it is a missed opportunity, and one more reason not to read the current meta as a preview of December.
What carries over to 1.0 is your knowledge of the game, not your current build’s sheet.
What these weeks really give you
Fourteen weeks without a single balance change, from September 4 to December 11: that’s not wasted time. It’s a chance to learn a class inside out: its cooldowns, its resistance thresholds, its way of moving across the map. It’s also a chance to understand mechanics that will stick around after 1.0: the Ritual, the Wildwood (a time-limited zone you open on a map), and this freshly overhauled Trial of Chaos.
The event also offers a fresh economy, where everyone starts from the same point: it’s the moment to level a character without competing against players who’ve been settled in for months. And while Soul Cores are being buffed, there’s a real point in stockpiling a reserve before 1.0 reshuffles the gear landscape.
On our end, we’ve published 268 Path of Exile 2 builds since December 2024, 166 of them for Season 5; none of them becomes obsolete on September 4. If you’re looking for a starting point, our ranking of the best Season 5 builds still holds, and our beginner’s guide covers the fundamentals that won’t move either. Take 0.5.5 for what it is: a long window of stable play, to spend consolidating what you already know how to do.
