Grinding Gear Games has finally given a date. Path of Exile 2 exits early access on December 11, 2026, goes free-to-play the same day, and arrives with a brand-new melee class plus the final two acts of its campaign. The announcement dropped on August 25 during gamescom’s Opening Night Live, in the exact slot the studio had reserved for itself.
Here’s what’s confirmed, what isn’t, and what it changes for anyone playing the current season.
December 11, 2026: The Date the Studio Was Keeping to Itself

Three independent outlets give the same date. Game Informer, Shacknews, and GosuGamers all announce December 11, 2026. The studio itself was more terse: « The wait is almost over. Path of Exile 2 fully releases on December 11 PST. Ready your swords, Exile. Your greatest battle is about to begin. »
That sword imagery wasn’t just decoration: it’s exactly what the 1.0 delivers. On the calendar, the symmetry borders on cute, since the Steam page dates the early access launch to December 6, 2024. Between the two, two years and five days, and 96,846 English-language reviews logged on the store. We had been tracking the clues about this 1.0 since early August, with no date ever surfacing.
The Game Goes Free-to-Play on Launch Day
Starting December 11, Path of Exile 2 downloads without costing a thing. Until now, getting into early access required buying a pack; the game joins its predecessor’s model, free since 2013 and funded through cosmetic microtransactions. Game Informer puts it plainly: the title « is a free-to-play game and will remain one at full release. »
In practice, the entry barrier disappears on the day the game is at its most complete. For an ARPG that lives on its community and its trading economy, the December influx is a given. If you’re planning to jump in, our beginner’s guide still holds up until then.
The official site, in fact, still displays « Early Access is now live, » with a « Full release » tab freshly added to its menu. Four platforms are announced: Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The Duelist, the Sword Class That Was Missing

It’s the most tangible piece of new content, and the first Path of Exile 2 class built around the sword: the Duelist, a melee character equally at home with sword alone or sword and shield. The character carries his lore with him: trained relentlessly to earn a spot in the Grand Arena, where he sought vengeance, he had to flee during the Fall of Oriath and now fights for those who can’t defend themselves.
What the studio hasn’t detailed: the class’s ascendancies, its own skills, and how the sword fits into the existing tree. Nothing either on the names of the final two campaign acts that finally complete the story, or on their length. These details stand a good chance of landing at ExileCon, November 7-8 in Auckland, whose ongoing qualifiers we covered in detail, barely more than a month before launch.
What We Saw Coming on August 19, and What We Missed
A week before the announcement, we published a breakdown of what was confirmed versus assumed around this gamescom. The results are mixed, let’s be honest.
Got right: the August 25 slot at the Opening Night Live, the Hall 6.1 B031 booth, the November ExileCon, and the « late 2026 » window for the 1.0. Also got right: the warning against gold-selling sites that were passing off their predictions as leaks.
Missed: the exact date, the very existence of the Duelist, and the shift to free-to-play announced the same day. We wrote « late 2026, no exact date » when GGG already had its December 11 locked in.
Path of Exile 2’s Season 5 Still Worth Playing Before December

It’s the question everyone’s asking, and the one nobody has an official answer to. None of the announcement’s sources say what happens to the current league or to existing characters once the 1.0 lands. Neither Game Informer, nor Shacknews, nor GosuGamers touch on the subject, and the studio didn’t bring it up at the Opening Night Live.
What we can say without speculating: there are three and a half months left before December 11, plenty of time to level a character in Path of Exile 2 and play it without rushing. Season 5 builds, like the Sorceress Navira Fracturing Minion, hold all their value in this window. More debatable, though: investing heavily in an economy that will be wiped clean at full launch anyway.
One last event slots in before then. GGG is airing a livestream on August 27 devoted to patch 0.5.5, billed as the last major update before the 1.0. That’s where answers about the current league stand the best chance of surfacing. We’ll follow up once the stream has aired, with what was actually said rather than what the gold-selling sites will have guessed.
