Two screens, 7.6 and 5.4 inches, joined by a hinge built from more than a hundred precision parts. That’s the structure of the new iPhone Duo, unveiled Wednesday, September 9, at Apple’s fall event. The two halves of the iPhone Duo meet in a single continuous frame, sharing the same aspect ratio on both sides.

The price sets the tone. Expect $1,999 for the entry-level version in the US, €2,339 in France according to Apple, with preorders opening October 16 ahead of a release on the 23rd. For mobile gamers, the question splits in two, what a screen this large is worth unfolded, and how that price stacks up against the rest of the market.

What the iPhone Duo Showed in Cupertino

According to MacRumors, whose reporter Hartley Charlton covered the announcement, the technical trick sits in the hinge. Viscoelastic adhesives let the screen’s layers slide over each other « like pages in a book », preventing deformation over time. A titanium plate forms the base of the screen, reinforced with carbon fiber supports that hold the panel.

MacRumors, Hartley Charlton, September 9, 2026: the device open at the announcement of Apple’s first foldable iPhone.

Unfolded, the device is said to be the thinnest Apple has ever made, with an architecture that tucks its components into the camera bump. The frame is machined and polished titanium, protected by Ceramic Shield on the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, three times more scratch-resistant according to Apple, and the whole thing is IP68 rated against dust and splashes. Two colors are offered, Stellar White and Midnight Sky, and Touch ID, built into the side button, also allows unlocking from an Apple Watch.

A nano-textured finish cuts down on reflections across both screens, and a laser-etched treatment, applied pixel by pixel, is meant to reduce the crease’s visibility at the center of the inner screen without changing how it feels. The official Apple press release quotes Apple CEO John Ternus, who calls the iPhone Duo the biggest evolution of the lineup since the original model, driven by hardware and software designed together to « redefine what a foldable phone can do ».

The software adapts to this new format. Key controls move to the sides of the screen, the dock switches to a vertical layout, and Split View lets you open two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time. StandBy also takes advantage of the large screen, with music, calendar, or weather widgets, turning the iPhone Duo into a bedside clock. Image Playground now generates photorealistic images, which the upcoming SynthID standard will make it possible to identify, the same logic already applied to the labeling of AI-generated music on Apple Music.

The Spec Sheet: Screen, Chip, and Materials

On paper, the spec sheet comes down to a few numbers. The inner screen, the one that unfolds, measures 7.6 inches of Super Retina XDR, 50% more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max according to Apple’s press release, and 80% more than the standard iPhone 18 Pro according to MacRumors. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer screen covers 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro’s display area. Both screens share the same aspect ratio and ProMotion technology, with peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

The device’s brain is the A20 Pro chip, the same one found in the iPhone 18 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process, with transistors measured on a billionth-of-a-meter scale, allowing more of them to fit on the same surface and delivering more power without drawing more energy. Apple claims a 6-core CPU up to 20% faster, a 7-core GPU up to 40% faster, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine for on-device AI, cooled by a custom vapor chamber inspired by the M-series chips.

On the connectivity side, the C2 modem is said to be up to 50% faster than the C1X and to use up to 15% less battery. Each half of the device has its own battery, for a total of 24 hours of use switching between the two screens, or up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer screen alone. Fast charging reaches 50% in about twenty minutes.

Launch Price and Preorder Schedule

In the US, MacRumors puts the starting price at $1,999 for the 256GB version, with storage options up to 2TB. In France, Apple’s official press release lists €2,339, or €97.46 a month over 24 months, for the same storage capacities, from 256GB to 2TB. This price gap is not explained anywhere in the sources consulted.

Preorders open Friday, October 16 at 2pm Paris time, ahead of a release on the 23rd in more than 70 countries, including France. Twenty-eight additional countries will follow on October 30. Two accessories accompany the launch, a two-piece case at €89 and a Folio with stand at €149, both orderable starting October 16.

What a Foldable Screen This Big Means for Gaming

For mobile gaming, screen size and battery life over time matter just as much as each other. Unfolded, the iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch inner screen is roughly 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s, and Apple’s French press release explicitly names « multitasking, gaming, and demanding AI tasks » among the use cases targeted by its vapor chamber. Nothing in the sources available, however, supports the claim that games run better on it. No performance benchmarks have been published at this stage.

On its product page, Apple goes further, calling the inner screen « simply the best iPhone for enjoying movies, shows, and games ». A marketing promise, to be taken for what it is. No independent test has confirmed it so far.

The format also raises a question of content more than raw power. A large screen changes nothing about game availability on iOS, which partly depends on cloud gaming services, a technique that runs the game on a remote server and only sends the image to the device. Services like Xbox Cloud and its fifteen monthly hours would benefit from the added comfort, without the screen making up for the plan’s limit.

Finally, Split View, which lets users open two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, opens up another angle, following a guide or a voice chat on one pane while a match runs on the other. Apple Pencil USB-C support, announced for later in the year, says nothing, however, about possible controller compatibility, which no source mentions.

The Other Announcements from September 9, 2026

The same day, Apple also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, both also powered by the A20 Pro chip, the Apple Watch Series 12, the Apple Watch Ultra 4, and the AirPods 5 with active noise cancellation now included as standard. According to MacRumors, whose reporter Juli Clover recapped the event, preorders for both iPhone 18 Pro models open Saturday, September 12, ahead of a launch on the 18th. The other models were already available for preorder that same day.

Apple Intelligence, the system’s AI layer, is announced in sixteen languages with iOS 27 starting September 14, from French to German to Japanese, and its international rollout also relies on local partnerships, such as the deal struck with Alibaba for AI in China. Preorders for the iPhone Duo, meanwhile, won’t open until October 16.
