Protection Paladin, the tank that doesn’t fall
In vanilla, Protection Paladin is the raid’s second-choice tank: guilds prefer the Warrior for boss fights, but keep the Paladin around for five-man dungeons and to soak unpredictable damage spikes. Redoubt and Shield Specialization build a wall of blocks rather than dodges, and Holy Shield turns every block into extra damage and extra threat, the class’s most reliable way to hold a boss’s attention. Reckoning rewards the hits you take with bonus attacks, which makes this Paladin more dangerous the longer it tanks. In a group, it’s the class you put on adds or on a second boss when threat needs to hold without wavering; solo, it’s the toughest of the three specs to kill, at the cost of limited damage. It’s not a burst tree: it’s the one that doesn’t fall.
What Forever changes in the Protection tree
Of the tree’s sixteen talents, five are brand new and nine have been reworked: only Improved Hammer of Justice stays exactly the same; Toughness simply moves to a different spot in the tree, with its effect untouched. Sacred Duty cuts 30 seconds off the cooldown of three defensive cooldowns at once, letting you cycle them much more often in raid. Templar’s Bulwark is entirely new: an absorb shield equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 seconds, usable on demand. Vanilla Paladin was known for its limits as a raid tank; Forever tackles that head-on, and Blizzard named the class specifically in its communication for this kind of survivability boost, presented as the very example of its philosophy: filling gameplay gaps without erasing the class’s identity. Iron Creed and Swift Judgement round out the list of new talents, one built around threat, the other around Judgement’s pacing.

Templar’s Bulwark, the shield Blizzard is highlighting
Templar’s Bulwark is the talent Blizzard cites as its example to justify this survivability boost. How often will it actually come up in raid? The build guide will answer that once the spec has been tested in game, between the beta’s opening on September 17, 2026 and launch on November 4, 2026.
