« I don’t know when, but I know they’re talking about doing it. » Kris Zierhut, principal game designer on WoW Forever, said this in answer to a question from IGN: will WoW Forever lighting and its redone water ever reach the current WoW (« Retail »)? The answer: yes, eventually, with no date. The game opens on November 4.
« They’re talking about it » is not an announcement, and the press has not always kept the two apart. What Blizzard said, what it commits to, and why the job will take a long time. On WoW Forever lighting, you are the first to benefit.
What Zierhut told IGN, word for word
In the interview published on October 27, 2026 by Jacqueline Thomas (which we already covered for the triple spec), she asks why these graphics improvements exist here and not in the modern version of the game. Zierhut answers: « I think they were made here first, is a better clarification. » He goes on: « I think they’re planning on eventually doing some of these same things in the Retail game as well. » Then comes the opening sentence, with « better water, better lighting, those things are coming for retail as well. »

Two details carry weight in the sentence. Zierhut speaks of what « they » (colleagues, without more precision) are planning, not of what his own team will ship. And he says himself he does not know the date. PC Gamer, which relayed the passage on October 29, kept that caveat in its headline.
Not every headline is as careful. Icy Veins titles its article « WoW Forever’s New Visual Upgrades Are Coming to Retail », with no caveat in the headline. Here is the gap between the three wordings:
| Source | Wording | What it commits to |
|---|---|---|
| Zierhut, IGN, October 27 | « planning on eventually », « I don’t know when » | An intention, reported second-hand, with no date |
| Hazzikostas, But Why Tho, September 13 | « No specifics on timeline now » | A stated wish from the director, with no schedule |
| Icy Veins, headline | « Are Coming to Retail » | An arrival presented as settled, still with no date |
What the three share: no game version, no quarter, no zone named. The most senior person quoted, Ion Hazzikostas, speaks of work to be done, not of a scheduled patch.
Why it will take long: lighting redone by hand, zone by zone
The reason lies in how Forever was built. Interviewed by But Why Tho (interview by Mick Abrahamson, September 13, 2026), Ion Hazzikostas, Midnight’s game director, warns: « a lot of it is not as simple as just flipping a switch. » He specifies: « It’s also work that was done by hand by our environment artists across the entirety of those zones to relight them. » What would follow for Retail, in his words: « that would need to be done to whatever relevant content exists in Modern. » The last sentence of his answer: « No specifics on timeline now. »
The same interview gives an example of what this work produces: Duskwood at night, with players carrying torches or lanterns and real-time lighting. « It’s still the classic assets, » says Hazzikostas, but the mood comes out « massively enhanced. »
That leaves the scale. Harvey Randall of PC Gamer spent about fifty hours in the beta and describes lighting and colour palette adjusted by hand, zone after zone. He then sets two figures side by side. They are his own, drawn from a community game database, not Blizzard’s: about 114 zones for WoW Classic, counting unused zones, raids and battlegrounds, against 1,272 for the current list up to Midnight.
PC Gamer figures (October 29, 2026), unused zones, raids and battlegrounds included. Ratio: a little over 11 to 1.
With the method Hazzikostas describes, that means eleven times more zones to relight by hand. Randall wonders whether future Retail zones could adopt the technique without the old ones being redone; technically, he judges, that would most likely be possible, but nobody has announced that choice.
WoW Forever lighting, already playable: what you can tune
While Retail waits, you can judge WoW Forever lighting first-hand from November 4. According to MeinMMO (article by Cortyn, September 15, 2026, drawn from a BlizzCon panel), the day-night cycle now drives how shadows fall, and they move dynamically; each region gets its own hand-made fog, denser or lighter; water gains waves and reflections. The German site reports these points without naming the Blizzard speaker.

Blizzard itself describes WoW Forever lighting on its official Forever page: « Improved lighting and upgraded environments invite you to fall in love with the intimidating expanses and beautiful vistas of Azeroth. » The two visuals below come from that page, in full resolution.

WoW Forever lighting has a cost. In our measurements of the graphics settings, secondary lighting can cost up to 50 frames per second, while liquid detail stays almost free. For vegetation, the command that thickens the grass changes the scenery with one chat line. And if you are looking for new or reworked zones, the 54 maps compared with Classic show where Blizzard touched the world most.
The only solid date in the file: on October 27, 2026, Kris Zierhut did not know when WoW Forever lighting would reach the modern game.
