Four specializations dominate the top of the raid rankings on Ascension CoA. Three of them are played in fewer than one raid in eight. This isn’t a forum impression: it’s what 211,975 combat log lines collected between August 8 and August 24, 2026 show.
Here’s what these numbers show, and more importantly, what they don’t.
Ascension CoA: what these 211,975 fights actually measure
The data comes from Ascension Logs, the combat-analysis service run by the server’s community, which we query every week. The collection covers 22 bosses across three locations, Zul’Gurub, Molten Core, and Onyxia’s Lair, across the server’s four difficulties. It is complete: the number of lines retrieved matches exactly the number announced by the source, with no truncation.
Of the 70 specializations tracked, 66 receive a score. The other four fall short of the minimum threshold, set at 15 distinct players and 30 fights, below which a ranking stops meaning anything. The role breakdown gives 44 damage specs, 12 tanks, 9 healers, and 5 supports.
As for the pick rate, it’s calculated on a separate set: the 1,587 high-difficulty fights, mythic and ascended, out of 13,468 recorded encounters. A rate of 50% therefore means the spec showed up in one high-stakes raid out of two. It’s the clearest signal of what players choose when the stakes rise.
Four specs at the top, and almost nobody playing them
| Specialization | Index | Tier | Presence | Players | Fights |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bloodmage Accursed | 1.862 | S | 14.4% | 132 | 1,586 |
| Runemaster Riftblade | 1.801 | S | 7.8% | 77 | 817 |
| Runemaster Glyphic | 1.702 | S | 12.7% | 120 | 1,504 |
| Stormbringer Maelstrom | 1.617 | A | 6.9% | 69 | 916 |
Bloodmage Accursed posts the best index on the server, across all roles, at 1.862. For reference, the average damage spec sits at 1.386 and the S tier starts at 1.645. It’s playing in a league of its own, and only 132 players use it.
Even more striking, the Runemaster puts two specs in S tier. Riftblade shows up in 7.8% of high-difficulty raids, just 77 players across the whole window. The class was reworked recently though, as we detailed in its early-August overhaul. Same story for the Stormbringer, whose power pass landed on August 23 and isn’t reflected in these numbers yet.
Templar Zealot, the server’s only consensus
Only one damage spec manages to be both excellent and massively played. Templar Zealot posts an index of 1.689, placing it in S tier, with 63.3% presence in high-difficulty content and 510 recorded players.
It’s the only case where the community and the numbers agree. Its August 8 rework landed just before the tier opened, which probably helped.
On the healing side, Cultist Heretic plays the same part with a 1.656 index and 70.8% presence. It’s the most-played spec on the server, across all roles.
At the other end, Necromancer Death shows up in only 1.3% of high-difficulty raids, just 21 appearances out of 1,587 fights. Its index of 1.267 still places it in C tier, far from catastrophic. It has simply fallen out of habit.
What this ranking doesn’t tell you
A number taken in isolation can easily backfire on whoever cites it, so it’s worth laying out the limits of this Ascension CoA ranking.
Supports can’t be measured this way. Primalist Grovekeeper is the second most-played spec on the server, at 66% presence, and its index drops to 0.789. That number doesn’t mean it’s bad: a support exists to amplify others, and an index built on raw damage and healing captures none of that work. Four of the game’s five supports get no score at all for this exact reason. Grovekeeper gets one as an exception, and it’s misleading.
The tier scale is unified. It’s calculated on the 44 true damage specs, then applied as-is to healers and tanks, so the same letter means the same thing everywhere. It’s a defensible choice, but it means a healer’s tier is being compared against specs that don’t do the same job.
A recent patch doesn’t show up yet. The window ends on August 24. The August 20 healer rework therefore only has four days of data behind it, and the August 23 patch almost none. These rankings will describe a different server in three weeks.
The full ranking, updated with every collection, lives on our Ascension tier list. And if you’re first trying to find out where the content stands, Molten Core and Onyxia have been open since August 19.
