Project Ascension shuts down all its realms on September 5, 2026, at four in the morning. Five days before the deadline, a new message landed on the project’s official Discord. It doesn’t talk about the end. It talks about what comes next.
The team announces it’s moving to its own game, with no ties to World of Warcraft or any Blizzard title. The future Ascension MMO has neither a name nor a date. But your account carries over, so does your launcher, and the Donor Points you’ve spent come back as a currency reserved for founders. Meanwhile, a farewell event is emptying Azeroth of its inhabitants, creature by creature.
« Ascension is becoming its own MMO »: the five points of the announcement

Full text of the message
@everyone Ascension is becoming its own original MMO
Here is what you need to know right now:
- You will keep your Ascension account.
(Also, on the new site, you’re going to be able to see your account number.)- You will access the launcher and game at https://ascension.gg/
- You can use your existing launcher, it will automatically update when the playable alpha is ready.
- All of the DP you’ve used on Ascension is being credited to your account in the form of a new currency that you’ll use on exclusive founder cosmetic items for the original game.
There is a lot of work already done, and if you want to participate in shaping this new era of Ascension, you won’t have to wait through years of just teasers and concept art.
The immediate goal is a small, rough playable alpha gamemode that you can opt-in to, jump in to experiment and give feedback early, and then we’ll build from there together. There will be a future announcement when that is coming.
Message posted on Project Ascension’s official Discord under the name Dutch.
The message lands in the official Discord’s general channel, preceded by an @everyone mention. The opening line sets the tone: « Ascension is becoming its own original MMO ». The rest lists what every player needs to remember right away.
- The current Ascension account is kept. On the new site, every player will be able to see their account number.
- The launcher and the game will remain accessible from ascension.gg.
- The launcher already installed will update itself as soon as the playable alpha is available. No reinstall needed.
- All DP (Donor Points, Ascension’s donor points) spent so far are credited back as a new currency, reserved for exclusive founder cosmetics.
- The immediate goal is a small playable alpha, deliberately rough, available by sign-up to test and gather feedback early.
Dutch notes that a chunk of the work is already done. Players who want to take part in this stage won’t have to wait years staring at mere teasers and concept art, the pre-production illustrations studios publish while they wait to have something to show. An announcement will follow once the Ascension MMO alpha is ready to open.
The site, the launcher, the account: nothing to reinstall

Dutch was clear on the technical point that worried most people: « You will keep your Ascension account ». No account to recreate, no password to reset. The message adds a new detail: on the future site, every player will be able to see their account number, information that has stayed hidden until now. The launcher and the game will keep being hosted at the same address, ascension.gg, the one tens of thousands of players already have bookmarked.
Nothing to download on your hard drive either. « You can use your existing launcher, it will automatically update when the playable alpha is ready », writes Dutch. The same executable will fetch the future Ascension MMO’s files when the time comes. This program already knows how to roll out new content without starting from scratch: it’s how Wrath of the Lich King arrived on the Area 52 realm, the one closing out the realm list in the screenshot.
The August 31 screenshot shows the gap between the two timelines. The « PLAY NOW » button still sits at the top of the page, and the « SIGN UP AND PLAY NOW! » form is still taking sign-ups. Seven entries show the « Online » status: Login Server, Vol’jin – Conquest of Azeroth, Rexxar – Conquest of Azeroth, Darkmoon – Season 10 Wildcard, Dawnrise – Season 10 Freepick, Bronzebeard and Area 52. Five days later, all of this WoW content will vanish from the site and the social accounts, as the team announced on August 29 : ascension.gg, the social accounts and the launcher « will be used for something new ».
Your donor points come back as founder currency
Dutch’s message settles a sensitive topic: money already put into the game. All DP (Donor Points) spent on Ascension are credited to the account as a new currency reserved for founder cosmetics. The site’s presentation page notes that these points were never required to play: the launcher, the game and account creation stay free. That’s the framework the conversion is meant to preserve.
The text still leaves three areas in the dark. No conversion rate is given, so there’s no way to know whether one spent point will be worth one unit of the new currency, or a fraction of one. The term « founder cosmetic » isn’t defined anywhere: mount, armor dye, title, portrait frame, nothing spells it out. And the message talks about points that were « spent », not a balance. So what comes back matches what has already been used, not necessarily what’s left on an account at the moment of the shutdown.
These three questions remain open as of August 31, 2026. No official answer has been published on the fate of an unspent balance, or on the detail of the promised items. Better to say so plainly than to put forward a guess. What is taking shape, though, is the spirit of the mechanic: it rewards those who supported the project financially, without ever making payment a condition to play. The future Ascension MMO inherits that principle along the way.

Souls of Ascension: the farewell plays out in four acts
On the official site’s timeline, a farewell event unfolds in four parts. The first is called « Souls of Ascension ». The next three all share the name « Heart of Ascension », the second one starting three days after August 31. The principle fits in one sentence: players kill creatures to harvest their souls, and a counter shared by the whole server advances with every kill. This past weekend, it climbed from 82,000 to 84,000, out of a target of 116,000.

An in-game tooltip describes the harvested item: « Souls you’ve collected during your journey in preparation for ascension. Every unique creature is a soul. Once harnessed, the creature slain permanently becomes a ghost in the world. Souls you harness are shared partywide. » A few useful details before diving in:
- A creature surrounded by a blue halo has already lost its soul and will stay a ghost. Look for the ones without that halo.
- Souls stack in batches of 1,000 in the inventory.
- Game modes count separately: war mode (open-world PvP), the Iris, and PvE. A zone cleared out in one mode can still be swarming with targets in another.
- The smallest critters in the scenery count toward the total too.
What makes this interesting isn’t the activity, which is as repetitive as it gets. It’s what it leaves behind. Wherever players have passed through, the world’s inhabitants become ghosts that won’t come back, and the scenery empties out before the eyes of the whole community until the September 5 cutoff. Other MMOs have staged this kind of ritual before a major transition, a razed capital or one last world raid. Ascension applies the same logic on the scale of a server going dark for good, before reopening as the Ascension MMO. Nobody knows yet what these souls will be used for once the counter hits its cap. The three remaining acts might answer that question.
A playable alpha, not years of concept art
The end of the message sets a frame. A lot of the work is already done, Dutch writes, and joining this new era won’t mean waiting « years of just teasers and concept art ». The immediate goal fits in one line: a small, rough playable alpha, opt-in, meaning reserved for those who sign up and never forced on anyone who played on the old realms.
A studio that promises rough over polished is taking an unusual communication risk. The word « rough » sets low expectations instead of selling a dream, and nobody will demand a finished game on the day the alpha opens.
What the message doesn’t say matters just as much. No date in the announcement itself, whose only hint of a timeline sits in a fallback line, « there will be a future announcement when that is coming ». Dutch was far more specific elsewhere, answering players, and the next section comes back to it. We know when the current realms go dark, not when what comes next arrives. The article by PCGamesN, signed Ken Allsop, confirms the closure of all « emulated WoW realms » under a « mutual agreement » reached with Blizzard, following the disappearance of other unofficial servers like Turtle WoW and Stormforge.
The team has been running realms for ten years, it knows how to ship and maintain a server. Building a world, an engine and systems without the World of Warcraft foundation underneath, it has never done that. That’s the real unknown for the Ascension MMO to come.

Before GTA 6: the only deadline Dutch has given

In the Discord channel, the day after the announcement, a player jokes: ‘ETA before GTA7 I guess?’ Dutch answers flatly: ‘Something you can play before GTA6 even.’ Twenty-four reactions pile onto that line. It’s the only calendar clue given since the closure announcement: GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a date confirmed by Rockstar and later reaffirmed by Take-Two. As of August 31, that leaves less than three months.
That line deserves to be weighed for what it is. An answer typed into a Discord channel, between two jokes, doesn’t carry the weight of a press release. Dutch isn’t promising a release date, he’s signaling an intention. Earlier in the same conversation, asked whether the team was starting from scratch, he added: ‘Goal is something playable fast then build on it.’ The strategy on display is a fast, incomplete launch, not a finished game before November.
Another answer from Dutch reframes the whole question. Asked whether everything begins only after the shutdown, he replied: ‘There was (and is) something already in the works.’ The new MMO didn’t start the day the realms went dark, it existed before the announcement, running alongside the WoW server. On the comparison circulating in the channel with a rival project, Dutch shut it down in two words: ‘Not spellwake.’
That timeline gains weight next to another project. Moonwhisper Games, the team behind Turtle WoW (the other big unofficial WoW server shut down this year), announced on June 1, 2026 that it too was building its own original MMO. Three months later, the studio is still at the foundation stage: building the world, writing the lore, setting the pillars, with a handful of pre-production illustrations. The game doesn’t even have a name yet. Two opposite bets are on the table: ship something small and fast to build with players, or lay solid groundwork before showing anything. The first can be checked in under three months, the second stays unverifiable for a long while. That’s what makes the Ascension MMO’s promise risky: it’s dated, which makes it checkable.
The Ascension MMO will have to make a call on classless
For ten years, Ascension stood out through one simple choice: no class forced on you at character creation. Classless mode let you pick spells from across the whole game to build a custom hero, an ARPG mechanic grafted onto an MMO. Wildcard drew from the same library, randomized at every level. Then Conquest of Azeroth arrived, with 21 original classes drawn from Warcraft lore, each locked to its own spells. It’s this mode that made the population explode this summer, weeks before the shutdown announcement. Our measured specialization rankings for Conquest of Azeroth shows it: the meta there is every bit as locked-in as on any classic MMO.
Dutch’s message says nothing about the future game’s character system. Nothing at all. That’s an absence, not a hint. Long-time players, the ones who were still around when Molten Core and Onyxia opened on the server, say it bluntly: what kept them around wasn’t World of Warcraft itself, but the freedom to start from a blank page. One single way to gear up, one single rotation, one single talent branch depending on whether you’re hitting one target or several, that’s exactly what ten years of Ascension had let them avoid.
I say this with thousands of hours of high-level PvP and PvE behind me. Keeping accounts and converting donor points is good community management. It says nothing about the game. One more original title with locked classes has no reason to win out against the market’s big names, which already do that better and with more resources. A game where you build your hero from an entire library of spells, nobody else occupies that space. The Ascension MMO will have exactly one argument to make to its former players. This is it.

je pense qu’ils utilisent a fond l’ia pour developper vite.
@mooshism Oui c’est certain !
